Generally the dances of traditional music are circumscribed to the zone where they are developed initially, that is to say to the surroundings where they were gestated. Breaking that geographical barrier is not an easy task, but the rhythms that achieve it tend to become, in the long run, musical forms of universal scope.

In Venezuela, Joropo is usually spoken of as the national rhythm, since it is interpreted and danced in almost the entire country. However, these are regional variants in each case, so, in my opinion, they have not really broken that barrier.

But there is a rhythm, to which the label of the "Queen of Folklore" has been placed, which has managed to bridge that gap and since the 60s it has been conquering more and more space in the whole Venezuelan territory.

This is the **Gaita**, a musical genre born in the west of the country, in the state of Zulia to be more specific. This musical form has different variants, in some cases it changes its instrumentation and even the metric, and each of them is very interesting and good, but today I am going to refer to the one called "Gaita de furro", which is the one that has achieved the greatest diffusion and is the one that has managed to become a musical form of the whole country.

Although it is not the intention of this post to study its origin, it is important to point out that it is a music that fuses elements of indigenous, Spanish and African culture. The name "Gaita" (Bagpipe), which is the same as the instrument played in Galicia and Scotland, is associated with this music, it is believed, because one of its variants was interpreted in the past with a guajira flute whose sound resembled the european wind instrument.

The gaita is a rhythm that used to be played mainly in November and December, because it was associated with the cult of San Benito (St. Benedict the Moor), which is celebrated on December 27, and Christmas. The gaita could talk about any topic, but it was highlighted as protest music, as religious songs and as a commercial advertising tool, since there were many commercial brand songs, for which the merchants paid in order to promote their products. Such is the case of "La Flor de La Habana", a gaita that promotes a popular tobacco brand in its time.

In the 60s, the gaita managed to break into radio programming in the capital of the country and soon began to emerge groups of this kind in Caracas and gradually expanded its reach. Gaita groups proliferated everywhere.

At the end of the 70s, with the appearance of the Guaco group, the gaita underwent a process of extreme modernization, which did not please the defenders of the tradition, but gave an additional boost to the genre. At the end of the 80s, there was a return to the traditional sound, but with the extensive experience that the modernist era had given, the gaita was enriched in harmonies and modern sounds, but with its traditional essence.

Today there are many groups that play the gaitas, more or less modern, but they have become a mandatory part of the Christmas celebrations and have also been gaining ground, because now the gaitas begin to sound on radio stations since September and arrive in many cases until February. And if there is a traditional music that dances all of Venezuela, that is the gaita.

Generalmente los bailes de música tradicional están circunscritos a la zona donde se desarrollan inicialmente, es decir al entorno donde se gestaron. Romper esa barrera geográfica no es una tarea sencilla, pero los ritmos que lo logran suelen convertirse, a la larga, en formas musicales de alcance universal.

En Venezuela se suele hablar del joropo como el ritmo nacional, pues el mismo se interpreta y se baila en casi todo el país. Sin embargo, se trata de variantes regionales en cada caso, por lo cual, según mi criterio, no han roto realmente esa barrera.

Pero hay un ritmo, al cual se le ha colocado la etiqueta de la “Reina del Folclor”, que sí ha logrado saltar esa brecha y desde los años 60 ha venido conquistando más y más terreno en todo el territorio venezolano.

Se trata de la **Gaita**, un género musical nacido en el occidente del país, en el estado Zulia para ser más concretos. Esta forma musical tiene distintas variantes, en algunos casos cambia su instrumentación y hasta la métrica, y cada una de ellas resulta muy interesante y buena, pero hoy voy a referirme a la que denomina “Gaita de furro”, que es la que ha logrado la mayor difusión y es la que ha logrado ir convirtiéndose en una forma musical de todo el país.

Aunque no es la intención de este *post* entrar a estudiar su origen, es importante señalar que es una música que fusiona elementos de la cultura indígena, española y africana. El nombre de “gaita”, que es el mismo del instrumento tocado en Galicia y Escocia, está asociado a esta música, según se cree, porque una de sus variantes se interpretó antiguamente con una flauta guajira cuyo sonido se asemejaba al instrumento de viento.

La gaita es un ritmo que solía tocarse principalmente en noviembre y diciembre, pues estaba asociado al culto a San Benito, el cual se celebra el 27 de diciembre, y a la navidad. La gaita podía hablar sobre cualquier tema, sin embaro destacó como música de protesta, como canto religioso y como herramienta de publicidad comercial, pues eran muchas las canciones de marcas comerciales, por las que los comerciantes pagaban a fin de promocionar sus productos. Tal es el caso de “La Flor de La Habana”, una gaita que promociona una marca de tabaco popular en su época.

En los años 60, la gaita logró irrumpir en la programación radial de la capital del país y al poco tiempo empezaron a surgir grupos de este género en Caracas y paulatinamente fue ampliando su alcance. Los grupos de gaita proliferaron por todas partes.

A finales delos años 70, con la aparición del grupo Guaco, la gaita vivió un proceso de modernización extremo, lo cual no le agradó a los defensores de la tradición, pero le dio un impulso adicional al género. A finales de los años 80, hubo una vuelta al sonido tradicional, pero con la extensa experiencia que había dado el época modernista, la gaita vino enriquecida en armonías y sonidos modernos, pero con su esencia tradicional.

Hoy en día son muchísimos los grupos que interpretan la gaita, más o menos moderna, pero se han hecho parte obligatoria de las celebraciones navideñas y además han ido ganando terreno, pues ahora las gaitas empiezan a sonar en las emisoras de radio desde septiembre y llegan en muchos casos hasta febrero. Y si hay una música de raíz tradicional que baila toda Venezuela, esa es la gaita.

Im Allgemeinen werden die Tänze der traditionellen Musik auf die Zone umrahmt, in der sie ursprünglich entwickelt wurden, das heißt auf die Umgebung, in der sie geboren wurden. Diese geographische Grenze zu durchbrechen, ist keine leichte Aufgabe, aber die Rhythmen, die es erreichen, werden auf lange Sicht zu musikalischen Formen universeller Reichweite.

In Venezuela wird Joropo normalerweise als der nationale Rhythmus bezeichnet, da es in fast dem ganzen Land gespielt und getanzt wird. Dies sind jedoch jeweils regionale Varianten, die meiner Meinung nach diese Barriere jedoch nicht wirklich durchbrochen haben.

Es gibt jedoch einen Rhythmus, zu dem das Label der "Königin der Folklore" gesetzt wurde, der es geschafft hat, diese Kluft zu überbrücken, und seit den 60er Jahren erobert es im gesamten venezolanischen Gebiet immer mehr Raum.


Dies ist die **Gaita**, eine im Westen des Landes geborene Musikrichtung, im Bundesstaat Zulia um genauer zu sein. Diese musikalische Form hat verschiedene Varianten, in einigen Fällen ändert sie ihre Instrumentation und sogar die Metrik, und jede davon ist sehr interessant und gut, aber ich werde mich heute auf die "Gaita de furro" beziehen, denn es ist sie die die größte Verbreitung erreicht hat und es gelang ihr, eine Musikform des ganzen Landes zu werden.

Obwohl es nicht die Absicht dieses Beitrages ist, ihren Ursprung zu studieren, ist es wichtig, darauf hinzuweisen, dass es sich um eine Musik handelt, die Elemente der indigenen, spanischen und afrikanischen Kultur verbindet. Der Name "Gaita" (Dudelsack), der mit dem in Galizien und Schottland gespielten Instrument identisch ist, wird mit dieser Musik in Verbindung gebracht weil, so glaubt man, dass eine ihrer Varianten in der Vergangenheit mit einer Guajira-Flöte interpretiert wurde, deren Klang dem Europäisches Blasinstrument ähnelt.

Die Gaita ist ein Rhythmus, der hauptsächlich im November und Dezember gespielt wurde, weil er mit dem Kult von San Benito (St. Benedikt der Mohr), der am 27. Dezember gefeiert wird und Weihnachten, in Verbindung gebracht wurde. Die Gaita konnte sich über jedes Thema unterhalten, wurde jedoch als Protestmusik, als religiöse Lieder und als kommerzielles Werbemittel hervorgehoben, da es viele kommerzielle Markenlieder gab, für die die Händler bezahlten, um ihre Produkte zu promoten. Dies ist der Fall von "La Flor de La Habana", eine Gaita, die eine zu seiner Zeit beliebte Tabakmarke fördert.


In den 60er Jahren gelang es der Gaita, in der Hauptstadt des Landes in die Radioprogramme einzudringen, und bald begannen Gruppen dieser Art in Caracas aufzutauchen, und erweiterten allmählich ihre Reichweite. Überall wuchsen Gaita-Gruppen.

Ende der 70er Jahre erfuhr die Gaita mit dem Auftauchen der Guaco-Gruppe einen extremen Modernisierungsprozess, der den Verteidigern der Tradition nicht gefiel, aber dem Genre einen zusätzlichen Schub verlieh. Ende der 80er Jahre gab es eine Rückkehr zu den traditionellen Klängen, aber mit der umfassenden Erfahrung, die die modernistische Ära gegeben hatte, wurde die Gaita mit Harmonien und modernen Klängen bereichert, jedoch mit ihrer traditionellen Essenz.

Heute gibt es viele Gruppen die Gaitas spielen, mehr oder weniger modern, aber sie sind zu einem obligatorischen Bestandteil der Weihnachtsfeiern geworden und haben auch an Boden gewonnen, da die Gaitas seit September in Radiosendern zu hören sind und in vielen Fällen sogar bis Februar. Und wenn es eine traditionelle Musik gibt, die ganz Venezuela tanzt, dann ist das die Gaita.
