Weekend on Jomfruland, a scenic Norwegian island

My travel partner Shirin has a friend named Marthe who lives in Kragerø on the east coast of Norway.  We spent the last couple days staying at Marthe's place, a cozy little house on a hill in a charming seaside town.  Marthe has a boyfriend named Ray, a chill Latvian guy who sold a event-planning company in order to travel the world.  Now he sustains himself through seasonal chef gigs, bouncing from place to place to cook in different restaurants across the world, and he's also written a book about his travels called *It's Time,* which I recommend checking out.  Marthe also has a super-smart and precocious daughter named Frøya who is two years old and highly entertaining.  

All five of us-- Shirin, Marthe, Ray, Frøya, and myself-- all took a boat on friday to an island called Jomfruland, where Marthe has a camping trailer/tent that she bought for cheap from a friend of hers.  So we got to spend all day walking around this small but beautiful island, breathing fresh air, chatting in the sun, petting horses, and observing odd feats of nature.  The highlight for me was a rock formation covered in yellow moss, with long bands of discoloration indicating layers of sediment deposit and that the whole formation had at one time been positioned in the opposite manner, with the layers stacked on top of each other, but as the island formed the bedrock was pushed over, gradually rolling into the position it now holds as the coastline of the North-East corner.  There are a couple pictures of this spot below, but I didn't capture the striations, just the colored moss and my new friend Ray.  

The whole island was very cool though, mostly because there was so much variety in such a small space.  Many different types of trees, several styles of coastline, many different types of animals... I wish I'd taken more photos, but the ones here will be enough to give you a small idea of what it was like.  Note, the next photo below is not mine-- it's actually from Google, but I wanted to show what was between the first photo, emerging onto the coast, and the next couple photos of Ray at the rock formation.
