This is my submission for #FridaySkyBlue #colorchallenge initiated by @kalemandra. These photos are original and were taken by me, @zanetaviz, in Chefchaouen, Morocco. Chefchaouen is the most turquois city of the world. Chefchaouen is nicknamed the “blue pearl of Morocco”. Located in Northern Morocco, the city's signature color is a variety of calming shades of blue that lower your blood pressure in seconds. Known as Morocco's “blue pearl” or “blue city”, the buildings in Chefchaouen are painted using a talc or chalk-based paint that looks so beguiling. .jpg) Chefchaouen's blue walls are a popular subject of interest. There are several theories as to why the walls were painted blue. One popular theory is that the blue keeps mosquitos away, another is that Jews introduced the blue when they took refuge from Hitler in the 1930s. The blue is said to symbolize the sky and heaven, and serve as a reminder to lead a spiritual life. However, according to some locals, the walls were mandated to be painted blue simply to attract tourists at some point in the 1970s. The mountains above the city give the appearance of two horns – and it’s believed that this is where the name Chefchaouen comes from (literally meaning “watch the horns” in a local dialect).  Chefchaouen is a popular shopping destination as well, as it offers many native handicrafts that are not available elsewhere in Morocco, such as wool garments and woven blankets. The goat cheese native to the area is also popular with tourists.  The beauty of Chefchaouen's mountainous surroundings are enhanced by the contrast of the brightly painted medina (old town). It is this beauty and the relaxed atmosphere of the town that makes Chefchaouen very attractive to visitors.  Chefchaouen was founded in 1471 as a point of defense against the invading Portuguese.  Just two decades later, the city expanded with the arrival of Muslim and Jewish refugees fleeing forced conversion to Christianity in Granada, Spain. These new residents built Chefchaouen’s signature whitewashed houses and courtyards with citrus trees, giving the city its European flair, which still exists today.  Chefchaouen is a perfect place to wander and take photos.  Chefchaouen is undoubtedly one of the best places to visit in Morocco. Unlike Marrakesh, Fez, or other places you may spend time on a trip to Morroco, there are really no must-see places in Chefchaouen. The city itself is the sight. Just wandering is the best thing to do.  Chefchaouen is a photographer’s dream come true. Largely shut off from the world for over 400 years beginning in the 15th century, the city feels like it’s from another time.
