Mythology has always attracted me so much. That may be because of the fairy tales I have read or been read to by my mother and sisters when I was a child. My liking of mysticism and unavoidable attraction towards those tales of supreme deities has made me read throw simple readable adaptations of Norse and Greek mythology. I’ve always been wanted to be like Prometheus, the bringer of fire to people in need as a guide and endure pain for just cause. But the brute force and the shady darker nature of these gods counterparts, Titans or Frost Giants have always fascinated me. Like how a slight turn of events turns the gods into demons and monsters.

Hindu mythology is also somewhat similar. The holy trinity and all that God and demons always being in the clash and conflict too can be seen in its stories about gods. I’m no expert and have no intention of hurting others’ religious beliefs. But the fight between Deities and Asurs has always been somewhat similar to all the other mythologies.

The ongoing outbreak of coronavirus has made me stay home for the past week with no exact purpose. All the other shows that were supposed to be released by all the streaming platforms getting postponed made my life miserable with having nothing to watch. While my desperate search of finding something of quality to watch was taking me through pages and pages of sites after sites and suddenly, Asur fell before me.

This is an Indian web series consisting of 8 episodes in a season and the first season has been released in 2020. Available for streaming on the Voot platform, a video on demand site. 

Now to dissect it, the show can be criticized from two sides.
If you compare it to other Indian TV shows or web series, Voot and the director Oni sen has done a wonderful job of creating unique content. The cinematography, set designs, Acting background score and the opening credit with its music is top-notch.

But now to perceive it as a critique, the show is so over dramatized and made to look like Mindhunter (I’m going to write a review about this next) and dexter that it fails. It is like a bad mixture of cheesecake and hot sauce. Both are delicious, but together not so much.

So there Is this special child with a 139 IQ score, whose mother died at his birth, always being looked down upon by his father. The father is a religious preacher. So he wanted his child to be born at a specific time deeming him to be a precious gift from the gods. But the child comes out two days before the fixed date and the mother die of blood loss. So he always blamed the child for the death of his mother. And comparing him to demons by calling him Asur. This traumatizes the child and makes him ruthless and Angry. To release the built of anger he initially kills a pet he finds at the side of a road and later his own father.

The beginning of this show builds up quite nicely. If you overlook the maliciously poor use of special effects, you’ll enjoy it. But from the third episode, The show keeps dragging on and on pulling and stretching on a single thread for miles. So, if you are a child genius and while getting older, your IQ increase, making you a brilliant top-notch hacker who can commit perfect crimes, why would you need a federal officer to tell you how to kill someone?

The show emphasizes that the killer himself is Asur reincarnate and he wants to birth out his arch-nemesis as is written in the mythologies who can compete with him. But the chain of events gets so lost on each other that you’ll forget what you were watching just the previous scene.

Comparatively, This is a much better show even compared to the other ones of this respective genre. But the director and write could’ve done a better job if they put more time on story building then making it so complex only to push out a second season. You could’ve released 4 episodes and still call it a season had all the time and budget you’ll need to compete with even HBO's’ shows of this respective genre. But being short-sighted and ambitious at the same time will put you in a vicious circle of your own making, making you go nowhere. 

 So if you have enough time, which you do cause we all are and should be at home to stay safe, you can give this a try if you have a knack for Indian TV shows or want to try out this culture.
