Amid a growing 'swarm' of over earthquakes (now over 1000), and Montana's largest quake ever, scientists are growing increasingly concerned that the so-called 'super-volcano' at the heart of Yellowstone National Park could be building towards a Category 7 eruption. So what is a 'super-volcano' and what does its explosion mean for life on earth? NatGeo explains...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3c2UxRF9qyw
As National Geographic details...

Think of Yellowstone as a gigantic pressure cooker, fueled by a massive supervolcano. Water from rain and snowmelt, much of it centuries-old, percolates through cracks in the Earth’s crust until heated by molten rock reservoirs deep below. The water then filters upward, eventually finding release in the thousands of geysers, hot springs, and other hydrothermal wonders.
http://www.zerohedge.com/sites/default/files/images/user3303/imageroot/2017/07/05/20170708_NatGeo.jpg
Eruptions of this supervolcano expel so much material that the crust caves in, creating a craterlike depression called a caldera.

Yellowstone is known as a supervolcano because of the violence and size of its explosions.
http://www.zerohedge.com/sites/default/files/images/user3303/imageroot/2017/07/05/20170708_NatGeo1.jpg The plume of hot rock has been calculated at more than 600 miles deep. But scientists suspect it actually descends as far as 1,800 miles, all the way to what’s known as the Earth’s outer core-mantle boundary.
http://www.zerohedge.com/sites/default/files/images/user3303/imageroot/2017/07/05/20170708_NatGeo2.jpg
The reservoirs and plume are superheated, spongelike rock holding pockets of molten material called magma. The reservoirs’ heat, which originates in the plume, is what keeps the area’s geysers boiling.
http://www.zerohedge.com/sites/default/files/images/user3303/imageroot/2017/07/05/20170708_NatGeo3.jpg
Ancient rain and snowmelt seep down to just above the volcano’s magma reservoirs, until they are superheated and rise again through the fractures. Volcanic heat and gases help propel steam and water toward the surface, where they escape through hot springs or geysers.
http://www.zerohedge.com/sites/default/files/images/user3303/imageroot/2017/07/05/20170708_NatGeo4.jpg
Hot water rises from a deep reservoir into a teapot-shaped chamber. As water and gases fill the sealed space, pressure builds, preventing boiling. Some water spills into the spout, releasing pressure and allowing the water in the chamber to boil. Steam and water then blast up the spout.
http://www.zerohedge.com/sites/default/files/images/user3303/imageroot/2017/07/05/20170708_NatGeo5.jpg
Pressure builds behind a narrow constriction until steam shoots through. Some water splashes out, then jets of steam and water explode, rising on average 130 feet. As the chamber drains, pressure drops, and the process begins again.

Highest recorded eruption - 184ft

Eruptions per day on average - 17

Minutes length of eruption - 1.5 to 5

The park’s hydrothermal features cluster in basins at the margins of lava flows or near faults. Rivers and streams are heated as they pass through these basins. Heat and escaping gases are also evidence of the subterranean forces that lie below Yellowstone.
http://www.zerohedge.com/sites/default/files/images/user3303/imageroot/2017/07/05/20170708_NatGeo6.jpg
So how would a supervolcanic eruption at Yellowstone impact the regional ecosystem, and the US more broadly? Well, as The American Dream blog's Michael Snyder points out, it would be nothing short of catastrophic.

Hundreds of cubic miles of ash, rock and lava would be blasted into the atmosphere, and this would likely plunge much of the northern hemisphere into several days of complete darkness. Virtually everything within 100 miles of Yellowstone would be immediately killed, but a much more cruel fate would befall those living in major cities outside of the immediate blast zone such as Salt Lake City and Denver.
http://www.zerohedge.com/sites/default/files/images/user245717/imageroot/2017/06/10/hotspot.JPG
Hot volcanic ash, rock and dust would rain down on those cities literally for weeks. In the end, it would be extremely difficult for anyone living in those communities to survive. In fact, it has been estimated that 90 percent of all people living within 600 miles of Yellowstone would be killed.

Experts project that such an eruption would dump a layer of volcanic ash that is at least 10 feet deep up to 1,000 miles away, and approximately two-thirds of the United States would suddenly become uninhabitable. The volcanic ash would severely contaminate most of our water supplies, and growing food in the middle of the country would become next to impossible.

In other words, it would be the end of our country as we know it today.

The rest of the planet, and this would especially be true for the northern hemisphere, would experience what is known as a “nuclear winter”. An extreme period of “global cooling” would take place, and temperatures around the world would fall by up to 20 degrees. Crops would fail all over the planet, and severe famine would sweep the globe.

In the end, billions could die.

So yes, this is a threat that we should take seriously.

Source : ZeroHedge

For only the best of ZeroHedge and articles relating to Steem, Follow me @Zer0Hedge

Nature is impressive. We think we are the most powerful but we are nothing in front of it. I will follow you because I love science and your articles are well written. Good job and thank you.

Just upvoted. Good post. Also, fun fact: bulletproof vests, fire escapes, windshield wipers, and laser printers were all all invented by women, :D

With the current increase of seismic activity in the Yellowstone area, and the upcoming Total Solar Eclipse on August 21, 2017, I have had this on my mind. Mother Nature Bats Last.

12 years ago my wife and I Who were just dating at the time drove cross-country. One of the places that we stopped in camp that was Yellowstone National Park. It was absolutely breathtaking. I have three young children and this summer in August we're going to drive halfway across the country . Yellowstone National Park is one of the places I wanted to stop and see. A blog post like yours is the reason why steemit is great. It is a wealth of knowledge from all different walks of life. This article with the YouTube video and diagrams is an excellent teaching tool that I will use when I bring my young kids to Yellowstone National Park. When my wife and I went cross-country we went to 35 different states and visited 20 or more national parks . We bought the national Park pass for $50 and that gave us entrance into every park it was phenomenal. My kids want to go camping so I want to bring them on a rememberable camping experience. I love to travel especially driving with my whole family in the car . As far as super volcanoes I hear you're totally this is definitely a threat to our civilization in the future natural disasters in general I believe will pick up as time progresses into the future. Liv will be well enjoy the day.

It will _probably_ not erupt in our lifetimes. I do know that Russians joke about how Yellow Stone could solve a lot of problems. If there is a full exchange of nuclear weapons too, it is rumored that the caldera would be targeted on purpose in an attempt to set it off. I don't suggest people live near active volcanoes, especially super volcanoes. You shouldn't be living within, or immediately down range, from a primary nuclear weapon target either. The same is true for nuclear power plants. Why risk it? Why have your children and their children grow up in the same areas over the next 100 years? Sure, nothing may happen while you're alive, but something could happen later.

Yep I think of a supper volcano as a reset button for humans. Its going to suck. Hopefully we have a "Noah" that can build an ark in space to keep humans plants and animals alive for a while. We should probably look for anyone that is doing anything "crazy".
