Real life crime stories were always popular source of inspiration for Hollywood film makers. However, criminals who could have called themselves successful were rarely or never subject of Hollywood films. Explanations for that are simple. First, successful criminal is a criminal whose activity remains undetected and who, therefore, remains invisible to the public. When some of them, by some chance, become revealed, they are usually boring professionals and total opposite of the colourful personalities worthy of a motion picture. This problem was only partially solved in *The Newton Boys*, 1998 period drama directed by Richard Linklater.
Based on the non-fiction book by Claude Stanush, this film tells a story about group of men who used be the most successful bank robbers in early 1920s America. The film starts in 1919 when Willis Newton (played by Matthew McConaughey), son of poor Texas farmers, comes back from jail where he served three years, wrongly convicted for the theft of 15 US$. Willis decides to become a real criminal for a change, but his first attempt of bank robbery – spectacular daylight raid in the style of Jesse James - ends as miserable failure. Willis decides to change the modus operandi - robberies are going to happen only at night, only banks with specific kinds of safes are going to be hit and those safes are going to be cracked with the help of explosives expert Brentwood Glasscock (played by Dwight Yoakam). Willis recruits three of his brothers - ex-convict Dock (played by Vincent D'Onofrio), hedonistic Jess (played by Ethan Hawke) and conscience-burdened Joe (played by Skeet Ulrich) - and the gang starts series of bank robberies across the country. Five years and some 80-200 banks later their way of life is coming to an end - Willis' attempt to become legitimate businessman has failed and the banks are getting equipped with more guards, better safes, better alarms and other security measures that Newtons can't deal with. Newtons decide to end their criminal career with one spectacular heist that should leave them settled for life - robbery of a mail train carrying millions of dollars. That robbery is going to enter criminal history books, but things go very wrong for Newtons and federal authorities, embodied in K.P. Aldrich (played by Bo Hopkins), are on their trail.
While the story that inspired this film is amazing, the film is not. The reason for that can be found in the approach Newtons took towards their activity - which is briefly explained in the end credits that feature documentary footage of Newtons giving interviews. Bank robberies for them were business and nothing more - banks provided good opportunity, Newtons found a way to exploit that opportunity and their activity became professional routine instead of thrilling adventure. Richard Linklater, Texas director not exactly known for fast pace in his films, tries to portray this routine with the series of semi-humorous vignettes. For the most part he manages to keep the attention of audience, although perfectly reconstructed period detail (and Linklater's homage to silent films at the beginning) has more to do with it than usually not very successful attempts to flesh out Newtons as interesting characters. On the other hand, the acting in the film is mostly good, but McConaughey, Hawke, D'Onofrio and Ulrich are overshadowed by country singer Dwight Yoakam in memorable role of death-obsessed explosives expert. Julianna Margulies, who rarely appears in cinemas these days, is wasted in film's obligatory romantic subplot. *The Newton Boys* picks some pace at the very end, but this doesn't compensate lack of real drama in the most of the film. On the other hand, this might have been the only way to show audience that criminal careers can never be successful and glamorous at the same time.
