Japanese Black Pine: First Year of Success [Bonsai]

Check out this photo collection of a favorite bonsai trees in my collection. This month, I am sharing a different tree in my collection in each article I post.

The Japanese Black Pine is one of the newest trees in my collection. I started growing it in the winter from a little starter tree I was given. Initially the needles were losing their luster and turning tan and less green. Over the summer its resparked vigor has brought forth lots of new green healthy needles. Lots of fertilizer applied and decandling at the right time has certainly restored the health of the tree.

The style of this tree is an experiment in how much curve I can reasonably apply to a tree. Initially I forced a deep slant and bend at the base from where I planted it. This tree is very flexible and thick branches respond well to extreme bending forces.

![20190820_113053.jpg](https://files.steempeak.com/file/steempeak/creativetruth/Og2K0l6Q-20190820_113053.jpg)

Now that the dominant bud has developed into a tall leading branch, I am focused on developing a high shepherd's hook curve to arch over the center space of the tree.

An amazing trait of the Japanese Black Pine is that after the initial candles form in early summer, a second set of candles (buds) form at the end of summer. Most of the growth energy to form fat new branches is focused at the top of the tree where the most light is received. This miraculous cycle of producing a second set of needles later in the year is called a Second Flush. Bonsai growers pay close attention to the expected day of the year when this happens.

![20190820_113044.jpg](https://files.steempeak.com/file/steempeak/creativetruth/53aMfbRz-20190820_113044.jpg)

If all the buds are allowed to remain, a cluster of branches will form all at one spot at the top of the tree. This is not ideal in bonsai as it will create a thick ball-shaped whorl in the trunk at the top of the tree. Waiting too long to decandle the tree can cause defects like a whorl to occur.

![20190820_113033.jpg](https://files.steempeak.com/file/steempeak/creativetruth/nX18t4XS-20190820_113033.jpg)

In bonsai, we often choose to remove some of the strongest buds, or drastically cut them down to a small fraction of their size. This causes a chain reaction throughout the tree to refocus energy into other buds that exist, including ones on lower limbs of the tree. As a result, the tree appears to be in supreme balance and beauty when all buds develop evenly with the same sized needles and branches.

In a week or so, I'll be selecting which of these buds to remove in order to create the ideal shape I am after. Only two of these buds will be allowed to remain on top. One will become the dominant branch to extend the trunk, and the other will become a new side branch to fill out the alternating canopy of the tree.

![20190820_113116.jpg](https://files.steempeak.com/file/steempeak/creativetruth/5bFImQ3b-20190820_113116.jpg)

In this photo you can see this lower branch reaching out to the right. The location where this small branch joins the main trunk is the same location where I last decandled the tree this past June. Above that branch is all new growth from this year.

![20190820_113133.jpg](https://files.steempeak.com/file/steempeak/creativetruth/lCmuC8KL-20190820_113133.jpg)

These marks I photographed to show details of the effects of wiring. Initially I wired this tree in March, and recently removed them in August.

The wires were meant to hold the trunk steady and also to force the tree angle to bend sharply. As the tree grows, the trunk also expanded, and caused the bark to fold around the wire. After removing the wire, it is interesting to view how deep the grooves have become.

Some bonsai masters will wire the trunk of their trees and purposefully leave the wire attached forever. Eventually the tree bark twists and folds over and even starts to meld over the outside of the wire, concealing it entirely. It creates a tree with a more aged appearance from the spiral wrinkles formed.

Personally I am not sure if that is a good idea for all types of trees, as it can injure the cambium layer under the bark. Deep crevices into the vasculature of the tree can encourage insects to bore into the soft center of the tree and destory it from the inside out. Rain will also seep in and cause rot to the inner wood, which may cause the entire top of the tree to suddenly wither, die, and fall off.

Generally it is best not to leave wires on for too many months. Consult a bonsai master to learn the best practices for wiring and handling specific varieties of trees.

Thank you for viewing my article. Looks like I survived the recent hardfork after all.

# Birthday

Today I am celebrating my 2 year Steem Birthday since I first created my account @creativetruth. I've seen so many changes in the communities here, the leadership, and of course the rise and fall of prices for steem.

I am most proud to say that through hard work and loyalty I have managed to stake out a decent amount of SP without ever powering down or selling out. Additionally I have never used funds to purchase Steem. My confidence in the dramatic leadership direction changes from our top witnesses (not necessarily the ones I, and the majority of us, support) is not strong enough to entrust them with saving my money so it can prosper with good returns, and to improve the blockchain experience for everyone. However I do not fret allowing the staked steem I've earned thus far be used to weather whatever crazy forks are thrown my way. Even though every hardfork brings certain new challenges to overcome, I am sure we can get through all of these storms together.

Follow my lead, and let's grow together!

![20190820_123133.jpg](https://files.steempeak.com/file/steempeak/creativetruth/0AqjXlg6-20190820_123133.jpg)

Be sure to follow my work this week. I'm in the process of sharing the whole host of bonsai trees in my collection. There is over thirty trees I am growing. That means you can enjoy more than a month of fresh content from @creativetruth's back porch.

Share the goodness with me.

Most of the trees I have wired in the past have also healed from the marks left behind. We'll see how this one looks in a few months. Winter tends to plump up my trees.
