Deuteronomy 9:5-6 (KJV)
*Not for thy righteousness, or for the uprightness of thine heart, dost thou go to possess their land: but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee, and that he may perform the word which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
Understand therefore, that the LORD thy God giveth thee not this good land to possess it for thy righteousness; for thou art a stiffnecked people.*

We learn a great deal about the character of God in this passage. Though God works with mankind differently in the various dispensations, He never changes. His character remains the same yesterday, today and forever.[1]

I note that God gave Israel the land:
**Because of His promise
To correct the sin condition
Not because Israel was righteous in their own ability** 

The same is true of any man in any era. God does what He does based upon His promises and His purpose. His plan is to rid man of the sin condition. He uses sinful people to accomplish His purpose. 

We err the most when we believe He uses us because of some goodness in us.
