It’s the 100th Daily Backlog!! Can you believe it? Because I can’t!!

The Road to 100

Good day backloggers!! I can’t believe it! We made it to 100 posts on The Daily Backlog!! When I first started this project, I thought it was a huge task to even make it to 10 and the thought of making it all the way to 100 didn’t even cross my mind. But here we are. There’s a benefit to bustin’ mine and my wife’s hump, cranking these posts out five times a week as well. And that’s that we put a significant dent in the ole backlog. Well, technically it kinda kept a bit of an equilibrium due to some generous developers and publishers sending us review codes. That and I may have added a few myself here and there, but overall, we’re ahead of where we started at the beginning of 2019!!

That’s right, after 100 posts, The Backlog Odyssey is down to 722 backlogged games and 27 completions!! Some of those completions have been stellar and will go down as some of my new favorites. While others… let’s just say, I’m glad I’ll never have to play them again. And here is the list of all 27 games, ranked in order of my least favorite to my most cherished:

27. Bass Masters Classic (SNES)

26. Clay Fighter (SNES)

25. Ghoulboy (PS4)

24. The Witness (XB1)

23. Hello Neighbor (XB1)

22. Animal Crossing (Gamecube)

21. Panty Party (Switch)

20. Volgarr the Viking (XB1)

19. Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure (PS1)

18. Child of Light (XB1)

17. Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force (Switch)

16. Rym 9000 (PS4)

15. Pato Box (Switch)

14. The World Next Door (Steam)

13. Stardew Valley (Switch)

12. Destiny 2 (XB1)

11. Monster Hunter: World (XB1)

10. Xenon Valkyrie+ (PS4)

9. Strikey Sisters (Switch)

8. Overcooked (PS4)

7. Reverie: Sweet As Edition (Switch)

6. Devil May Cry 5 (PS4)

5. Aggelos (Switch)

4. Crypt of the Necrodancer (Switch)

3. Riddled Corpses EX (Switch)

2. Resident Evil 2 (PS4)

1. Iconoclasts (PS4)

A pretty hefty and eclectic mix if I do say so myself. With some definite highs and some excruciating lows (I’m looking at you Bass Masters Classic)!! But looking at that list I’ve also discovered some new games that’ll go down in history as unexpected Backlog Odyssey classics like Overcooked, Aggelos, Riddled Corpses EX and Iconoclasts. Sure, it was no surprise to see the likes of Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry 5 and Monster Hunter: World rank high in my favorites to date, but it was those indie hidden gems that have left the biggest impression on me thus far! And that my friends is why I love doing this. I love finding those diamonds in the rough and sharing them with all of you!!

Tinker Town

But that’s not the only thing I love doing here on The Backlog Odyssey! No siree! One of my other favorite things to do is to crack open my precious electronic babies and tinker with them. Try to improve them, and occasionally push them beyond their boundaries so they no longer work. I mean, practice makes perfect am I right?! And to appease the turkey gods, let’s dive into some of my future tinkering plans, because some of them are actually tied directly to the backlog!

The first has to do with my Atari 2600. You see, I’m a stickler for being able to play my consoles on my fancy big screen HD TV and unfortunately, that’s just not possible with some of them. Well, technically it is, but for the most part it would be like trying to watch a movie through multiple screen doors and then applying a heavy handed gaussian blur effect. To remedy that, I picked myself up a RetroTINK 2X, which is an excellent little device that’ll upscale SD resolutions to 480p. And it works wonders! Sure it’s not 1080p or even 4K, but just having a progressive image (with no lag) coming out of your SNES is a sight to be seen! The only problem with it though, is that it only accepts composite, s-video and component video inputs. Which the Atari 2600 doesn’t have. So, now, it has been my goal to modify the system with s-video output! Which in the end will mean I can run it through my RetroTINK and have a crispy 480p image coming out of my dusty old piece of 70s hardware! The mod itself seems pretty easy and relatively inexpensive, so it may be a project you’ll all see in the near future!

The next project I’ve been thinking about has to do with my Game Gear. Which at the moment doesn’t even work. I think it’s just some bad capacitors preventing it from powering on, and I do know I’m able to find nice little cap kits for the Game Gear, so I may try that out when I’m ready to dive into that backlog. The real question though, is do I want to go further with it once it’s fixed? Obviously, the answer is yes, because I like to take the long and bumpy road. But taking that road means I have to decide if I just want to upgrade the screen to a nicer, brighter LCD or do I want to add a video out solution plus a controller port? I’m personally leaning toward the video out solution because that’s the more interesting and challenging endeavor. That and I’d then be able to capture video from it with my fancy RetroTINK and capture card! Oh, and play freakin’ Game Gear games on my TV!!

If I had unlimited money and time though, I think what I’d really like to do is make a super nice, full sized MAME arcade cabinet. That has always been a dream of mine! And it would most certainly include buying all the nicest and most expensive buttons and paddles, getting the nicest screen, doing all the electrical work, all of it! I think that would be a super fun project that would probably take me multiple months, but it would be more than worth it!

100 is the Basis of Percentages

Well my friends, I think I’ve rambled on enough for today! I want you all to know that I truly appreciate all your input and that you’ve stuck with me through these last 100 editions of The Daily Backlog! I also want to thank my wife for all the help she’s given me running this little project. From the pictures you see on each article to the work she does helping me edit and smooth out all of these words you see. Otherwise it would probably be incomprehensible!

And in celebration of the 100th post and as a thank you to all of you backloggers, I’ll be giving away two games! So keep an eye on my Twitter feed for details on how you can enter in the drawing!! And don’t forget to follow me so you don’t miss it!

If you want to play Game Gear games, consider picking up a Retron 5. While it doesn't do it natively, they do have an adapter that will let you play Master System cards and carts, as well as game gear carts. You can use the native HDMI output to play the games on the big screen. Sonic Drift 2 actually looks pretty good on there!

And Genesis and SNES games look really nice with the Retron 5. Just saying...

I've considered picking myself up a Retron 5, mostly so I can patch English translations into my imported games, but I love me some tinkering! That's usually why I'll opt to mod an original console over buying a 3rd party box like that. Like I said, I enjoy taking the long and bumpy road haha
