This raises a good point. It's a waste of compute power if a self-driving car sits idle for 20 hours a day. There should be a way to monetize the gear when it's not being driven. Maybe the car could even pay for itself. The article suggests that the aggregate computing power will be equivalent to "tens of millions of supercomputers", and that solar panels could be used to reduce the power costs.

LIKE DOGECOIN DEVOTEES, the mayor of Reno, and the leaders of El Salvador, Aldo Baiocchi is convinced cryptocurrency is the future. The CEO and founder of Canadian scooter maker Daymak believes this so strongly that when he unveiled one of the company’s first autonomous car last month, the 2023 Spiritus, he touted a bonus feature: the ability to mine cryptocurrency when the car is parked. Baiocchi told WIRED the company is still developing software for this purpose, but designers want cryptomining for car owners to be as simple as pressing a button. He says solar power on the roof of the three-wheeled electric car should help offset the energy consumption of mining Bitcoin.

β€œWe have the equipment in the car. We figure we might as well mine and make some money for the rider,” he said.

Car buyers now consider factors like safety, fuel economy, and resale value. But some businesses are beginning to talk about the computing power packed into autonomous vehicles as a selling point.

Where do such radical thinkers get their ideas from? This will be a fascinating development of electric cars and their application. I also love the eco-sensitive approach of first considering electric cars that will employ the infinite solar resource to mine crypto.

First time i have heard of this, i like the idea actually.

All for electric but i still think we need way more power capacity worldwide - Solar panels on cars is a start

a car with large state-of-the-art processors connected to super computers capable of processing 1000 Petaflops of operations per second (a one followed by 30 zeros), it definitely has to be taken advantage of in any way possible.

That's a nice idea we could think of implementing. I assume they are talking about using them as a distributed super computer using millions of parked cars at once. If so, if someone would pay me some hourly rate to compute on my parked car, and it worked out economical next to building a data center and renting that out, then sure, why not?

Let's think from the different perspective. It wouldn't be profitable at bitcoin mining. Autonomous vehicles basically run on GPUs, and Bitcoin ASICs vastly out compete GPUs. You'd lose more in electricity bills than you gained in bitcoins, unless you abused a free charging network, and even then it probably wouldn't be worth your time.

Thanks for the reply! I agree that it definitely would not be a good fit for bitcoin, but there might be some uses that make sense. I'm thinking something along the lines of gridcoin or golem, where they issue tokens as rewards for solving actual problems.

Also, the article gives the example of some countries that can't afford a high-end supercomputer, but could make use of fleets of government vehicles during their idle time.
