Korea Railroad Train Museum - Interior (철도박물관2)
Yesterday, I covered the outside of the railroad museum, here is [the link](https://steemit.com/trains/@abitcoinskeptic/korea-railroad-train-museum-7l3ccglf). Today, I will share more about the history and future of the Korean railroad and show some of the indoor exhibits.

*These are the main locomotives produced and used in Korea. Nowadays the have highspeed rail going pretty much everywhere important.*

## Museum Exhibits
#
The museum mostly has pictures, memorabilia tools and model trains. The pictures on the wall and the little models show all the different train types in Korea. Just like everywhere else, it pretty much went from human/animal powered, to steam, to electric, to diesel-electric, back to electric.

It's too confusing to go over the exhibits, so I've mentioned about them below the pictures. I didn't really watch any of the videos because they are all on the Internet anyway. Also, pictures of famous railroad people didn't interest me. I watched the drama 'Hell on Wheels' and after seeing those tough bastards in America in the 1960s, Korean development 50 years later just doesn't seem interesting. I also watched the Russian movie Siberian Barber. Wow, lots of train movies.

To be entirely honest, I liked the outdoor exhibit better.

*The communications was technically outside on the station platform. Left is a telephone to talk to the people down the line, there is morecode too for auto signals or bsd connections I guess. Center is a station signal and right is a station PA system.*

## Significance of Railroad in Korea
#
Unlike America and Russia which build a railroad to unify, Korea had it built by the Japanese for colonial exploitation more similar to Africa or South America. All roads lead to the south towards Japanese shorelines. Obviously, all railroads everywhere are for transport (trains-port, get it).

So historically, the train was viewed as an agent of colonialism. However, more recently after the war and colonialism ended, it was viewed as a way to go back and visit your family. Many people moved to the cities from the countryside, without cars, trains were the best way to get to your family. Besides, even now roads are hellish on the holidays, so trains are better.

![](https://d1vof77qrk4l5q.cloudfront.net/img/db5b920faf5cec467e8916a098aadd5462bbf80e.jpg)
*Here are fare machines. Left is a subway one and right is a train one. They can still be found actually, but most are touchscreen ir paid with an app. I sometimes use them when I get the chance and have free time ;)*

## An Agent of Unification?
#
Looking forward, Korea is still divided, the railroads are 'somewhat' connected. They can remove the barriers and roll a diesel train across, but there are no regular rail services across the border from South to North Korea. Every government really wants to connect the railroads. However, UN sanctions won't allow development and the North Korean rails haven't seen much improvement in the last 60 years. North Korean trains have a hard time reaching speeds over 40km/h and investing billions doesn't make sense at the moment.

However, it is the Korean dream now to unify the country with rails just as North America and Russia did 150 years ago. Recently the Koreas did a joint inspection, but until Mr. Kim learns to behave, America won't allow them to connect the rails. Besides, a good deal of people in South Korea aren't really keen on paying for their highspeed rail networks or other economic developments while they insult democratic governments, threaten destruction, and extort bribes in return. The South Korean economy can't exactly afford it either, also most people think the idea that the North Korean economy has untold riches is an outright lie. They can't even grow rice and sell their hair for money, they are hardly sitting on a gold mine.

Sorry, I'm getting sidetracked, this conversation is obviously very political (but interests me). The bottom line is no rails until there are no nukes and that's not gonna happen anytime soon.

![](https://d1vof77qrk4l5q.cloudfront.net/img/2b8fbe9cf6908b3109cabdb3225c6de1ad3a7de3.jpg)
*That is original Busan Station and the line from Seoul to Busan. Busan is the port city closest to Japan.*

## History of Trains
#
Many of the earlier trains and the first of a kind models were imported. Some of the earliest came from Japan since Korea was a Japanese colony during most of its early railway history. In fact, only the Seoul-Incheon line (Incheon is the port near Seoul) was completed before Korea was colonized.

The later post-war trains came mostly from America with some coming from Europe. And, the most recent trains came from France. In fact, Korea's fastest line is called KTX and until recently, they were ordered from France. Now they build a model here, but it is basically the same with a different name (KTX-sancheon). This train goes 305km/h but can actually travel slightly over 350 km/h.

![](https://d1vof77qrk4l5q.cloudfront.net/img/aaddb6f0f7c8249cbde3958725d1445386d3541e.jpg)
*These are the main North Korean lines. One goes to Russia and the other to China. Korea really wants to join them again. Some how I doubt a 10 day train ride to Europe makes sense. The arctic shipping route will be viable before long.*

## Future Trains
#
Right now they are working on a train called the HEMU-430X which has a top speed of 420km/h and will run commercially at 370km/h. This isn't something like a maglev or 'hyperloop'. It is a conventional train with wheels on rails. It should be out in 5 years or so since they already have the infrastructure ready. Maybe I'll talk more about that later.

![](https://d1vof77qrk4l5q.cloudfront.net/img/fb1e1aca46b379cc28e07529ed1ebd1991a64e16.jpg)
*This line goes to the South West. It was originally mostly farms there. They are a left-leaning region.*

## History of Lines
#
As mentioned the first line build was Seoul (Central/West) to Incheon (Central West Coast), but it is less than 50km. The 2nd line built in Korea was the line from Seoul to Busan (South East Coast). The third line was from Seoul to the Chinese border in North Korea along the West Coast and then Seoul to Chinese/Russian border along the East Coast (the Russian border is really short). The last major line built was from Seoul to the South West Coast. Until recently, that area was really rural and mostly for farming.

![](https://d1vof77qrk4l5q.cloudfront.net/img/cfb5436ef116c3e0c82a461e24212dc74c6be31d.jpg)
*Here is another timeline. Rail history is around 120 years old in Korea. It was unified with North Korean Lines until 1945. Maybe soon they will reconnect if North Korea behaves.*

## New and Future Lines
#
Now, as mentioned, there are lines everywhere. Most major cities above 1 million people have their own urban networks and subway systems, and there are regional branches everywhere. The most recent major line built was through the mountains to the Middle West Coast. I took it there went I went to watch an Olympic Ice Hockey Game during the 2018 Winter Olympics. Sadly, I don't think this line will ever make money. The entire thing is tunnels and bridges and it is a highspeed train to a tourist town that most people drive to. When you get there, you don't exactly want to hang around the train station and there is no major port.

![](https://d1vof77qrk4l5q.cloudfront.net/img/f322571b73698fa1bfcdefd13436ddda61784bc6.jpg)
*Due to a lack of natural resources, South Korea relies on manufacturing and innovation to thrive. The newest train will go upto 430km/h on existing highspeed railroads.*

## Rails for Economic Development
#
Basically, they are building highspeed rails to everywhere with a goal of making everyone be able to get to Seoul in under 2.5 hours on a non-stop line. I think the reason is largely political. Most of the people who live in these places don't work in Seoul and only come to visit family or the capital a handful of times a year. They hardly need to do a one-day business trip. In any case, they will need the HEMU to do that because currently, the record is 2.67 hours from Seoul to Busan.

As you can tell, I think they are over investing in infrastructure. I guess it is better than under investing. However, I don't think the reason will have economic advantages since they have already squeezed this dry and have the important routes done.

High-Speed rails for low population areas is stupid and they already have railroads to all the major cities and ports. They are literally building expensive bridges and tunnels to nowhere. Also, building more economic development zones when there are dozens of current ones undersupplied is foolish. And, don't even get me started on more international airports when only 3 of the 7 are making money.

Compared to say America it seems like transportation paradise, but that also means new networks are less profitable.

I guess I am bitter because they don't have a highspeed train to the airport. It takes 40 minutes from Seoul Station and over 1 hour from most of Seoul. I can be halfway across the country on the bullet train by then.

However, I'm getting sidetracked again since even this is political because of regional development issues.

***

As for the museum, sadly, I didn't get to see the model train show. However, I'd rather just go to the real tracks next door to the museum and watch full-sized trains. Or just look at the tracks every day when I'm riding the train to work or waiting for it, lol.

PS. I used my savings of 2 dollars to buy a black tea from Gongcha Teashop.

This is such a fascinating article :D I love it ! I learned so much about Korea just by following your blogs and reading your publications XD Really awesome~

Gosh, I didn't expect that rail roads and trains would lead to a political commentary but I can see now why this would be the case with the way they came to be in Korea... Super, super interesting !

Too bad you didn't get to see the model train show, though, cuz i love those miniature train sets, but you're right of course, the real life size trains are the real deal~

PS. how's the tea? :D

Its amazing how political and historically significant railroads are.

Not to mention dozens of expressions: off the rails, wrong side of the tracks, chug along, keep on tooting, blow the whislte, you missed the train, you are a train wreck, gravy train, train of though, runaway train, end of the line, fast-track, railroad something, coming around thebmountain, nice caboose....

The models are neat looking, but the trains were parked. I imagine there will be commentary which I would find annoying. It was a very rough map of Seoul, but the lines were random circles.

Tea was quite nice~!
