The secrets of Botox

A little botox here, a little botox there and you just got rid off some wrinkles!
Botox or botulinum toxin is best known to the general public for its use in plastic surgery. But you should know that today botulinum toxin is also being used in other areas such as neurology, psychiatry, etc.

Botulinum toxin is a very potent neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. It inhibits the release of acethylcholine (a substance necessary for muscle contraction).

Have you ever heard that it is "forbidden" to give honey to children under 1 year ? And do you know why?
Spores of the bacterium Clostridium botulinum can (sometimes) be found as dust on certain soils. Bees carry these susbtances and these can then be found in honey! A baby who eats this honey may then be hit by infant botulism, which is a rare and serious disease!

But today I'm going to talk about one of the many uses of botox in medicine and especially to patients with depression.

It seems that botox may have beneficial effects on the treatment of severe depressions, but this is still under investigation. And today I'm sharing them with you!
Botulinum toxin is used in cosmetic surgery in low-dose local injections to cause muscular paralysis to reduce wrinkles.
To treat some depressions it would be advantageous to inject botox between the eyes (see photo) where the muscle allowing us to frown is located. Botox causes a small paralysis and therefore would prevent depressed patients from frowning.
The less we frown, the less we have a negative facial expression making us sad.
In conclusion, the more we smile, the happier we are!

On the other hand, long-term botox causes a real paralysis of the muscles of the face and thus alters our facial expressions! Which can have adverse effects in the communication process!
![image00002.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmYxf7Nfqymrim9ynfyUXQyYHj7TBzqboZKZkY8TJzqXx1/image00002.jpeg)

I hope you enjoy it

Kiss

MDMA is far safer than Botox as is LSD in what is called "Micro-Dosing". BTE, what happens when the botox wears off with the wrinkles? Or if, heaven forbid, your doctor gives you to much? Just a thought, imho from an old guy

I don't have information about the DMA.
When the effects of botox fade, often patients re-inject which ultimately leads to paralysis and if the doctor injects a larger dose (which almost never happens) there will be a greater risk of paralysis too; )

Can't say much about botox, but the theory with not being able to frown leading to feeling less depressed makes a lot of sense to me.

A bit of MDMA on the other hand will make you smile from the bottom of your heart. So yeah! That's probably a lot more effective, too.

Since MDMA also has some short term and even possible long term effects on the serotonin system, though, it's probably involving some risk for the treatment to go sideways, too.

I think the key in treating depression is simply not to be found in any substance.

#GooglyEyes might help, though.

Using Botulinum toxin to treat depression sounds interesting. Do you have a source for the corresponding research? What was the size of the test group?

I think some music never hurt nobody and maybe selecting the proper personalised songs may help with depression... and if you mix it a bit with a different view of you’r sourrounding environment, you got lot of chances to keep depressing thoughts away.
For both techniques I recommend you giving a try #googlyeyes and #mytunes tags, one should test things before making any receipt, doesn’t it?
The only drawback is that you easily could get trapped! πŸ•Ί
Nice to meet you @debo-medstudent.

Hi:
Another interesting topic (earlier I read your tick article).
Botulinum...I don't know about the wisdom of using it for cosmetic purposes. There are potentially serious side effects, as described in this [article.](https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2018-01/muos-ptr012618.php) What the article discusses is a new antidote for the potentially fatal paralysis that can result from botox injections gone wrong. The article explains that botulinum may be used for ailments, like dystonias of the head and neck.

I look forward to your next post...
_____________________________
*I've come back to edit*. After reading @mathowl's comment I went looking for more information about Botox as a treatment for depression. It seems there might actually be something to it. Found this [article](https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/913697) that explains how treating muscles that are tense sends messages back to the brain.
> When we paralyze muscle fibers with BT, this may signal to the trigeminal nerve endings, possibly those involved in registering pain or muscle tension, a relief of physical stress, resulting in decreased emotional stress.

This is fascinating...much more than cosmetics.

Yes it is absolutely true! I just prefer to focus on a topic so as not to overload the article with too much information which would become complicated to follow.
But yes, the principle behind the botox phenomenon is sending nervous messages to the brain, which little by little learns to behave differently.
Also botulinum toxin can be dangerous and cause severe paralysis (this is why in cosmetics it is used in low doses). BT is also used in neurology in case of dystonia and this is used to reduce involuntary muscle contraction.
Thank you for your very interesting comment!

I hope you don't mind I continue, but since reading this I've been looking at those old studies that say smiling actually affects mood. I was able to find one [study](https://psycnet.apa.org/doiLanding?doi=10.1037%2Fbul0000194)from 2019 that did a meta analysis of old studies. Turns out--yep, the mere act of smiling can have a positive effect on mood in some circumstances for some people. That's information people can actually use. Although, a child who smiles while being disciplined is likely to make things worse, not better :))

I think there should be positive discrimination for actors who've done Botox, given how much more difficult it is to communicate their art the less expressions they got available.

Interesting about depression, has this actually been tried? Okay, so I have this weird memory association with the word Botulism and soon as I read Botulinum it kicked off. This association links Bob Dylan with Botulism, and whenever I hear, see or think (In this case) the word his image pops into my head. His picture from the cover "Blonde on Blonde" album specifically. Yeah...very strange. Well, the cause for this I think is in the 70s my mom and stepdad were very poor and dumpster dived for food. Botulism was often a topic, and my mom played a lot of Bob Dylan back then. Luckily, nobody got sick. Ha!
