A First Lady, fashion icon, photographer, editor, and historic preservation activist, she passed away from cancer at age 64. According to LIFE in August 1959, "Behind the 'precious Mrs. Kennedy' who dazzles the voters' eyes is a sensitive, individualistic young woman. She speaks Spanish, French, and Italian fluently. Her interests run, as her husband puts it, 'to things of the spirit—art, literature and the like.' When he lost the notes for a speech which he had planned to end with a quote from Tennyson's Ulysses, Jackie bailed him out of trouble by quickly reciting the appropriate lines."
