IBM to commercialize Quantum Computers with its ‘Q’ Division

<h3>IBM has been a pioneer in Quantum Computing research for quite some time now. The potential of the mysterious quantum computers is very exciting, and now, IBM is looking to commercialize this unimaginable processing power for everyday users very soon!</h3>

<h2>Quantum Computation &amp; IBM</h2>
<p>Quantum computers use <strong>superposition phenomenon</strong> which allows an atom to be in 1 and 0 position both at the same time. These are called quantum bits (qubits) which give quantum computers much <strong>more processing power </strong>than conventional computers which use 'bits' of either 1 or 0 value to code information.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Qubits are <strong>very hard to manipulate and make</strong> at the moment which is why despite decades of research, IBM has only managed to make five qubits working together in a computer, and this setup has to be<strong> cooled near to absolute zero</strong> temperatures in order to function properly. IBM is looking to <strong>improve</strong> that number to <a href="https://www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/51740.wss">50 qubits</a> very soon, and technology giants like Intel are also working on bringing Quantum <a href="https://www.technologyreview.com/s/603165/intel-bets-it-can-turn-everyday-silicon-into-quantum-computings-wonder-material/">computing to the masses</a>.&nbsp;</p>
<p><em>The Senior vice president of IBM Systems, Tom Rosamilia, said -</em></p>
<blockquote>Classical computers are extraordinarily powerful and will continue to advance and underpin everything we do in business and society. But there are many problems that will never be penetrated by a classical computer. To create knowledge from much greater depths of complexity, we need a quantum computer.</blockquote>

<h2>The IBM Q and Quantum Cloud</h2>

<p>With IBM Q, IBM is targeting a <em>truly universal quantum computer</em> which they claim is&nbsp;</p>
<blockquote>an industry first initiative to build commercially available universal quantum computers for business and science.</blockquote>

<p>The IBM's 5 qubit computer's processing power was <strong>made public</strong> last may in the form of a cloud service. Some 40,000 users signed up for the program, which performed over 250,000 executions using a simple programming language released by IBM. They also recently <strong>released a new API</strong> (Application path interface) on their cloud platform, which allows programmers to <strong>write scripts in their preferred programming language</strong>, rather than using the simple language released by IBM. This <strong>allows programmers to interact with Quantum computers easily</strong> without needing an extensive background in quantum physics.</p>

<p>IBM is being very <strong>tight-lipped</strong> about the details of IBM Q. They already have some un-disclosed clients lined-up to use the system. They haven’t announced when the system will go online, and they’re also not disclosing how powerful the system will be, or how much the cost will be to access it.</p>
<p>It won’t be long when Quantum processing power will be <strong>available for regular people</strong> like you and I probably in some form of cloud service first, and then with our very own quantum personal computers. Only the thought of having access to that much processing power is very exciting!&nbsp;</p>
