Tasty travel: Auction Rooms

My lovely sister returned home for a very quick visit to help celebrate our Nonna’s milestone 90th Birthday. I was lucky enough to have the entire week off work to enjoy all the time I could with her in our lovely city.

We had planned to go to so many places, but as it turned out, she already had plans to go to half a dozen of them. On her last day in Melbourne, we allocated the morning to breakfast at Auction Rooms in North Melbourne. She coincidently had been wanting to go there for almost three years (despite living in London). I on the other hand, have heard great things about the place in the last six months.

It was one of my first experiences of Errol Street which is very relaxed and attractive – characteristics which are carried through to Auction Rooms cafe . We walked in with excitement and were greeted by nice enough staff.

First things first, coffee was ordered. One advantage of Auction Rooms is that they roast their own coffee beans. I respect places like this and wish more people were interested in producing fine quality products. However, I must say, that I prefer the coffee available at Seven Seeds. I personally found the coffee to be slightly too strong for my liking.

The menu is one of those that I often describe as ‘amazing’. It was really difficult to choose just one dish. In the end, Mum decided on her favourite, mushrooms on toast, my lovely sister, ordered the ‘counter bid’ and for me, I went the typical route – honey toasted macadamia muesli with fresh strawberries and vanilla labna.

It became apparent after we received our meals that we must have chosen the wrong things, because what was delivered at our table, was not what was imagined from reading the menu and we felt rather disappointed with our experience of this reputable cafe.

Let’s start with Mum and her requested mushrooms on toast, a dish that was not listed on the menu. What came out was literally mushrooms on toast. The dish lacked substance and imagination with two slices of toast served next to a few grilled mushrooms and a small pot of butter. No creative flare used here, not even a little bit of decorative herbage. It looked plane and boring if you ask me. And although, as I mentioned it was literally what was requested, it was rather standard and in the words of my Mum – “disappointing”.

Another disappointment was the muesli that I ordered. I know, I know. You’re probably thinking, well muesli is boring anyway. But, on paper it sounded so delicious and mouth watering! I expected proper home made crispy and crunchy muesli. Instead, it was dry, raw with bits of toasted clusters and (too much) dried fruit through it. To minimise its dryness it was served with vanilla bean yogurt labne, strawberries and a few bits of macadamia praline (the only interesting aspect of this dish).

Overall, the dish was uninspiring, dry and resembled muesli that can be bought from the shelf at any supermarket.

My lovely sister’s dish on the other hand, had some imagination to it. ‘The Counter Bid’ incorporated two poached eggs served with grilled asparagus, verjus-poached peach, coconut tapioca with a pomegranate dressing (a slice of toast was an added extra). My lovely sister tried each aspect of the dish individually and then incorporated it all to get an understanding of the flavour combination. She explained that the flavours were rather unique to combine and although altogether it harmonised, she thought there were too many aspects to the dish and thought it was best to remove the coconut tapioca due to its unfamiliar texture, flavour and lack of compatibility with the other more earthy flavours.

Yes, we were all underwhelmed by Auction Rooms (or in my lovely sisters case, overwhelmed), I maintain the belief that perhaps we just ordered the wrong dishes. As we were leaving, we noticed a few beautiful looking meals that perhaps would have made our experience more enjoyable and delicious.

Interesting take - Auction rooms is good, but not to the level of the hype. There are literally hundreds of cafe's in Melbourne which are up to Auction Rooms standards. They are of course better at some dishes than others . In fact if you are looking for amazing museli/granola then I would try 'The roasting Warehouse' around the corner in Leveson Street, North Melbourne
