Sitting in my window seat, as I watch the scenery flying over Nova Scotia, then by Greenland, across near Iceland, and then to Great Britain, I’m thinking it is no way the Christopher Columbus story is true. It is ridiculous to think that the Europeans were completely unaware that America existed until Columbus sailed across the Atlantic seeking a route to India. We are to believe that that the powerful maritime countries like England, Spain, Portugal, etc had no idea what was across the Atlantic? It’s all way too close, and cross-Atlantic streams provides a highway of transport. A sea worthy sail boat, and a little curiosity would have taken you easily to the northeast coast of North America. Vikings was doing it and trading with Native Americans for hundreds of years. The Ancient Egyptians were master shipbuilders, There is evidence of ancient Egyptians making the voyage regularly, having a relationship of trade and cultural relations with Americans for thousands of years. They even found tobacco and cocaine which is only from the Americas in the bodies ancient mummies of Egyptians. The Mali Empire traveled regularly to the Americas, trading their gold tipped spears was widely known, they migrated and intermarried centuries before Columbus. The Olmecs in South America is more evidence of Pre Columbia West African Migration. Scholars now say that the Native Americans were more advanced and culturally diverse than previously thought, only a small portion migrated over the Bering Strait from Asia. Legend has it that Ancient America was a refuge from the tyranny of Rome. However the Romans had a powerful naval military force, and many ships that could make the voyage, so it could not of been distance or secrecy that kept the Roman Empire at bay. My speculation is that the mad rush to America by the European empires in the 1600s was more opportunistic, to lay claim to lands of a great continental wide federation of nations that collapsed due to a major plague or other cataclysm, rather than a new discovery.
