Sitting quietly in the comfort of his parent's protection and enjoying the serene environment, this calf has all it could ever need. And most importantly, it is harmless (or so we think).

But in my country, this animal is a cause of death and destruction. Causing communal conflicts so vast the government is powerless to curtail. I am referring to the constant clashes between the Herdsmen and the local farmers. Lives are lost daily and the government seem to either be powerless or chose to look the other way. Worse still, ethnic dimensions and politics is added into the mix. A deadly brew.

Herdsmen must graze their cattle. They are nomadic. They move from place to place following source of food for their cattle. The farmers on the other hand need the crops grown to survive. So when the cows devastate and destroy the growing crops while feeding, a basis for conflict and bloodshed is laid and that is what we get.

Why we cannot get the herdsmen or cattle owners to adopt the ranching system of cattle rearing is one thing I cannot understand. Simple and effective concept in agriculture yet neglected.

**But then, it is obvious that the cows are not the problem. Neither is the problem from the farmlands. The problem is us. We are selfish. We do not consider each others need. We forget that we need each other to survive and to progress.**

How I wish we could all be like the calf. Sitting down in the midst of our countrymen and women, knowing that we are safe and protected.
