Jangseung - Korean traditional totem pole at the village entrance.

Good afternoon my friends...^^

Today, I want to introduce 'Jangseung' which is Korean traditional totem pole at the village entrance.

A jangseung is a pole sculptured to represent a humorously grotesque face. 
It can be found at the entrance of villages or temple grounds or by the side of the road also.
It is used for marking the boundaries that separate villages and sometimes symbolizing the tutelary spirit of the village.

They are usually present in pairs, one male and the other female. 
The male Janseung wears the hat of an official and bears the words “Great general of all that is under heaven.” 
The female has no headdress and bears the words “Great general of all that is under the earth.”

Jangseung can be made of wood and stone. 
According to the materials used, it is classified as a wooden Jangseung, a stone Jangseung. 
Pine trees and chestnut trees are mainly used.

The scripts on the poles don't look as korean to me. Maybe they are so ancient that the chinese ideograms were still used?
