If it were left to them they would make a post out of their toilet habits and post it. I see people making 10-15 posts a day just so they can upvote themselves or hire bid bots for promotion. Problem is not the fact that they are making ten posts a day. Problem arises when you see titles like - 'my computer screen today', ' Lets see how much time my computer takes rebooting', 'Snapshot of my lunch', 'A street dog'................. All of theses are perfectly fine posts to make but doing it everyday just makes the blog look weird and the poster look desperate.

Couldn't agree more. Most of the time I don't even check the trending page anymore, I just hit up a few of my favorite authors or people that re-post good shit. I've unfollowed a lot of garbage and constantly looking for people posting stuff that is either relevant or interesting, not an easy task these days

I only been here for a week and agree with you 100%. I try to put quality content in and i want to establish good connections with similar people. I haven't checked those categories out for ages because I have more than enough awesome stuff appearing in my feed. Stick with it though, there is a huge amount of amazing content on the platform... you could read for 8 hours a day and still not come close, it's just tough to find.

**AGREE!** People in general tend to think in short term gains. We live in the era of instant gratification like Simon Sinek said. We want to get our treat right now. Thats why we post shitty ass selfies in social media, so morons we don`t care about boost our devastated confidence with a "like" or a little red heart. The same applies to Steemit. Lots of people, including witnesses and big accounts are boosting their shitposts to trending to feel more accepted and cool. If only they would think in long term gains, they would realize that they are selfishly fucking this place. You can earn a quick buck and a bit of exposure (I doubt anyone is lurking trending nowadays with such crap content being there) but what happens when newcomers come and take a look at "Trending"?? They are very likely to leave as fast as they came.

Let's say it's a logical consequence of the choices Steemit makes. They always tout condenser is only one of the interfaces and there are a lot of people pro bid bods. You can't combine all that with 'quality content'. I don't think a 'clean treanding' will show up any time soon for two reasons: * Trending is just an API call atm, it's baked in the code * Making a choice on what to show on trending an what not would require them to take a stance on bidbots and as such would open up for ~~hurting~~ crossing swords with big influential accounts. Removing it all together would be the best option for the platform. We can't really rely on users, nor on steemit, for giving it a positive look. But then the biggest frontend stops promoting the idea that a ton of money can be made here and we stop attracting new users. Catch 22.

I am in the opinion that Trending should be determined by account-based-voting. where it only gets up if it has lotsa votes rather than just a few whale votes. But if that was implemented, people might game it by having spam dust-voters.. There has been talks of using SMT to "determine" a human account. Perhaps using something like the GPT?

I definitely think Trending and Hot are broken. I'll write a post that gets 150 upvotes, it will be quality long form content, have a lot of comments and engagement and I won't make the Hot or Trending Page, but I'll see some garbage ass piece of content with 14 upvotes that's sitting at the top of trending. I realize that upvotes and comments can be faked so I know algorithm can't focus solely on that but the type of content that engages people is really what should be on Hot and Trending. I agree it stunts Steemits growth when someone new comes on here and is like oh what's trending on this site??? The problem is that often those who produce good/great content are overlooked and unable/unwilling, on principle, to pay for exposure. Myself I prefer the organic approach. My content is both image and word bias and is professional. It is pretty much overlooked here and I am not sure why... Sometimes I wonder if people see and read what I write and think I don't need the support because I am conversant _ I really do not understand when someone puts up a doodle and gets mucho $'s and yet I put up a pro piece of work and recieve diddly... Is it a lack of understanding by an uneducated audience or perhaps a little jealousy? I really don't know and feel deeply uncomfortable expressing my thoughts as I am not an egoist and do not wish to undermine others efforts. Encouragement at any level is always appreciated and important. Perhaps my gripe is fundamental to the quality of work that is often feted? An interesting discussion. :) xox

Hey @ldacey-laforge I've had a look through your blogs and the content is cool. It does vary a little so perhaps a bit more focus on the key tags/categories you like best, and a little bit of interaction (i've not checked this and it might well be happening) with the people who contribute to those tags. I notice you have your own website too? A lot of people prefer people bringing content that is new to the Steemit, although don't let that put you presenting work from the past here too. The post relates to the 'misguidied' use of promotion tools, there are also many accounts that invested in the beginning and at low prices, who generally support each other (or their alt accounts), whatever the content may be. To the untrained eye, some of this might be tricky to spot - and so in time you can sort of gain encouragement knowing this is taking place - so not to compare your content with these efforts. Totally contrasts with the view in the background. :) I guess I've missed the breakfast promotion on trending, but then, I'm one of the many users who hardly goes to trending. I'm either showing up there because it's on the way to something else, or I go because someone mentioned that someone's something is on there. You know, like their breakfast. :) I feel like the vast majority of people who are looking at trending and then upvoting something there are newbies with dust to drop. Most don't even know better. They're just trying to figure things out.

Well Trending is good for a scan when you know the deal. Upvote hardly ever, recognize the main booster types, and look out for new accounts offering tools or new apps - Those, for me, are what should be there. I think it was a cheesecake actually but i couldn't think of a title to include that :)

As long as the powerful bot owners are willing to accept SBD for any submission there will be scummy (scammy? same thing?) losers eager to pay. Ironically most of them could use a course in math because as long as SBD is close in value to SP they are mostly losing money from their tactics while enriching the bot owners/delegators allowing them to bypass that uneven split at payout if they were to curate naturally as most of us do.

The Trending Page is Steemits window to the outside . It's a disgrace that that is our advertisement to people or investors who look at joining our community . It gives them the impression that not only the content but the reward is the norm .

Word. I saw a post yesterday from a bidbot owner justifying the use of them pushing content into trending as adding value to the platform. I canβt remember who wrote it off the top of my head but I believe I saw you posting in there so Iβm sure you know what Iβm referencing. There were some interesting points in there that I hadnβt considered, and they were well articulated, though ultimately easily countered. I get the impression that the author genuinely believes heβs well intentioned. The bottom line is that bidbot owners and users artificially pushing themselves into trending are deluding themselves if they think what theyβre doing is a positive force. Iβm not saying this with moral judgments in mind, truly. But cognitive dissonance is one hell of a drug and everyone wants to believe theyβre a βgood guy,β just the same way that people miraculously transform from socialists to libertarians the second they find financial success. Anyway, Iβm sure Iβve ranted enough about all of this and youβre well aware of my opinion on it. But yes, please, if youβre going to boost your post, at least make it a good one.

Haha thatβs fine! The comment section of that post has turned into a beast anyway. Itβs going really well! Iβve found so many new people to follow and things I didnβt know about through it. I think I basically have as many contestants as I have prizes, so I predict that Iβll have a slight surplus of entries by the end. I want to do my best to see everyone get something so Iβll probably just end up doubling up and having my friends who entered send their share to another contestant on my behalf so they both get it. Iβm really excited to distribute them this weekend!

I love that picture :) I know everyone is commenting on the trending page etc, but I'll be shallow for a moment to say how cute it is !! I wonder how many of those who 'artificially' end up on trending, will actually see this, read it, and care. That's the other unfortunate part of this; those who care have the loudest voices...just look at the comments alone here, but the those your post is directed at probably won't even notice this. Asking people to behave differently isnβt a solution to the problem we all see. The way to make the blockchain work - and, consequently, the social platforms built on it - is to properly align incentives in order to achieve desired results...with blockchain protocols. We have a serious problem with an incoherence of protocols that reduce accountability and encourage scheming, spamming, and anti- or asocial behavior. If anyone is looking for actual results/solutions, theyβd better get serious about critically evaluating the code at a more macro and results-oriented level and stop fantasizing about good intentions and magical, widespread behavioral changes without directly incentivizing those changes. Simply saying, βCome on, guys! Could you please, pretty please stop doing these things?β will *never* yield results.

Having read a good deal of the discussions last year around the time of HF 17, I understand your rather negative attitude in general these days, and so I'll try not to take this message personally. I'm aware the rewards curve is broken, the incentives to police are not there, and that 'politely' suggesting that people act with more care and responsibility is unlikely to yield any real results. However, enough has been written about code changes to keep people entertained for a lifetime, I'll police who I can 'handle' when I see it with down votes and lists for the cleaning crew, and I'll continue to push any message out that may make even just one person consider their actions a little more. I feel that undermining the message of people who do care and are trying to put their best foot forward is not doing anyone any favors.

In an ideal situation, the said "breakfast" post would have been downvoted to not reach the trending page. But of course it will not happen in the real world because: 1. People fear the backlash of downvoting others 2. People think its a "waste of VP" to downvote others. The solution is there. Only not enough people are using it.

To be honest @abh12345, I think the people who vote their breakfast taco into trending with bid bots are the same people who'd rip off a soda vending machine because someone told them they could run a magnet across a certain part of the machine to make it dispense both a drink AND a large amount of change: Us: *"Why would you do that?"* **Them:** *"Because I can get money that way."* Us: *"But that's stealing and messing things up for everyone else."* **Them:** *"Who cares? I just want the free money!"* There's an alarming number of people in the world who think just like that. And if you call them out on their behavior, their argument is that "then the system should prevent what they are doing from being possible." =^..^=

Oooooh, no more donuts on trending though? π₯π₯π₯ Well 'breakfast and lunch' is what most poeple have *learned* to publish in centralized social media. Photographing a plate of spaghetti or themselves in the bathroom is what the large majority is *able* to do I guess. Maybe it's not even an intelligence issue rather than creativity. They do what others do, and like that a chain reaction evolves... I completely understand your wish to see more *respect* shown by the members of this community, yet I also agree with what @ats-david said here. Supposedly most of the people don't even listen to what we wish they'd do. They follow the masses which go there where the incentives are distributed.
