This photo of "Mr Blobby" often ends up in the collections of shots of the most bizarre creatures in the animal world. But the fame of the blobfish [Psychrolutes marcidus](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blobfish) , an abysmal fish that lives in the deep waters of southern Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand, is partly undernourished and caused by its natural habitat exit: when swimming in its oceanic home, between 600 and 1200 meters below the surface, this animal is not flabby and unspoiled as we see it.

The above shot was made in 2003 off the coast of New Zealand during a scientific expedition of a group of Australian biologists (New Zealand and Australia Norfolk Ridge - Lord Howe Rise Biodiversity Voyage, in short: [( NORFANZ )](https://australianmuseum.net.au/norfanz). In 2013, the animal (actually, the photo) participated in a competition for the worst creature in the world, hacking up the competition and becoming the [Ugly Animal Preservation Society mascot](http://uglyanimalsoc.com) .


### FISH OUT OF WATER

Its "relaxed" appearance, from a blob, as if it were about to melt, is actually due [to decompression damage](http://www.iflscience.com/plants-and-animals/you-have-been-lied-to-about-the-blobfish-this-whole-time/). Unless a scientist or a fisherman does not force him, the blob fish never ventures on the so-called " twilight zone" , the area that begins at 200-300 meters deep, characterized by high pressure and darkness.

### EXPANDED BODY
Its body is therefore made to withstand considerable pressures: it has soft bones and gelatinous cheeses that allow it to withstand stresses and control buoyancy. It does not even have the bladder, a body that allows fish to adapt to the specific weight of the environment, filling gas.
 
Without structural supports to keep it together, when it is subtracted from its natural habitat, the fish is decompressed and expands , transforming itself into an informal mass. From "normal" it is not a beauty champion, but, as they say, there is worse.
