You didn't lose money, exactly. When you buy Splinterlands cards they are an investment in the Steem block-chain. When you combine the cards they are worth more. What I do is rent my cards out so that people can play with them, so I get some steem payment that way.

Also, I have converted Beta packs into Beta Tokens, sold some and then I bought Alpha pack tokens (in steem-engine) which have increased in value.
Is it good or bad to buy Beta packs? The price of Steem has dropped so things are tight right now.

It depends on how often you play the game also. But if you are struggling financially, it's not advisable to buy these packs.
I ran out of potions, but I did manage to get Valnamor which is worth US$12 or more if I was to sell it.

But I see Splinterlands as a long term investment, like 10 or 20 years, so who knows what will happen in the future?

Its a tough decision to make as buying beta packs is like buying a lotto ticket. Sometimes you hit it big and other times not so much. Buying packs and holding them might be a good idea as they are running out of supply. They could be worth more then the $2 face value in the up coming weeks/months.

I used a few other crypto assets to buy 10 Beta  booster packs the other day.  That way I did not have to spend any of my personal money.   I will not be opening them.  Instead, I will hold them until their market value goes up and probably trade them for other assets of value in the future.  Alpha packs seem to be  worth twice their original price now.    It's possible the Beta packs will follow the same pattern.

Hello, Congratulations on your purchases and vision to explore this platform and media. I only now just stumbled on SPT and its network. Did not know they had linked me an account and given me some SPT. Not very well in touch with side chain activity of STEEM. Been playing Steemmonsters about a year now. Usually daily just to do quests and win cards. The recent adjustments to the game I guess will make that harder to do and winning fewer cards. So with that in mind existing card holders will see an increase in the value of the cards they hold. Its because fewer will be distributed. As this happens those that hold what has been distributed are combined making higher value cards. So Once the beta set is done being distributed and the lower value cards are consumed making higher value cards. Well you get what I mean. The cards you have are very likely to increase in value over time as long as the game is played. I do think it will last a very long time. Your a very young person and the game is likely to last well past your lifetime. Perhaps you sell one card someday for much more than the investment you have made on many cards. And think of all the hours of fun and challenge you will have playing the game in the meantime with cards you built. You might pass your cards to children of your own someday and they enjoy their value. We just don't know the potential of this game and the network its on.
