 We got our dog when he was about 6 months old and he'd spent those months living in an old static caravan with 2 of his brothers at a horse stables. He'd had no real training and never been off the land that made up the stables. Once through our door we took him off the lead and left him to explore his new home and he ran around excitedly sniffing his new surroundings and our large garden. Running up the stairs to follow our daughters we had our first problem, he didn't know how to get back down stairs and stood at the top crying to come back down. I had to carry him down a few times before he worked out how to come down stairs.  We had bought him a large plastic dog bed but he was scared of it so never even sat in it, the large bone we got for him though went down really well. Instead of the dog bed he chose his own place to sleep.  The next thing we discovered was he'd never been taken for a walk and never seen traffic on a road. The cars, lorries and busses terrified him and it took months to get him used to them, although he is still nervious with busses. The best thing was when we took him to the park for the first time. He'd never had the chance to run around on grass or play fetch with a ball. Teaching a dog to play fetch took a while and I think he more got it from watching other dogs play.  So that's our big daft rescue dog who has been with us about 3 years now and become part of the family.  thanks for reading and please if you're getting a dog, get a rescue dog.

He is just gorgeous, I love him! I've always had rescue animals (dogs and cats), and wouldn't trade them for anything. We've had a rescue cat for almost 3 years now. Thomas is a "tuxedo" cat (black with the white bib and feet), about 13 years old, and he weighs about 28 pounds - I can't even pick him up, lol. He is terrified of going outside, and has nightmares and abandonment issues. Poor thing, I just love him to death ... and yes, he totally rules our 'roost'!

Too many people buy a pet as a fashion item, paying stupid money to breeders while a rescue pet is a far better option.

I totally agree with you. There are so many pets who need a home and some love - and one of the saddest things I've seen is how many older/senior pets are at the shelters, waiting for someone to adopt them. Thomas was on his last days when I got him. Because of his age and size, no one wanted him.
