Frequency separation is a GREAT tool in PHOTOSHOP

The word "decomposition" is synonymous with "separation" in Russian has the meaning of "decay". There is a play of words ... "Moral decomposition" and "frequency decomposition" ... Moral decomposition should mean "moral decay".

*It was in the place of the preface*

# Let's start!

https://imgp.golos.io/0x0/https://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/196486/134002566.1a/0_1afd8c_7e8738a0_XXXL.jpg

I see a lot of problems that can be corrected by analyzing old photos, then I use a technique called frequency decomposition. In the retouching of portraits, this technique is of particular importance, since it allows you to change the cut-off drawing without affecting the texture of the skin. It was one of the biggest problems when the model has pimples or some kind of increased hairiness or something like that. I, then, used a dies and a healing brush ... With this approach, the texture of the skin disappeared and the person turned into a plastic doll. However, then such a result seemed acceptable.

But, it always surprised me, how did it turn out beautifully in magazines? Such a velvet skin! It's clear that they have budgets and make-up and even then, but still it was not clear! Well, how do they make such a skin!

And now, finally, it turned out!
There is such a technique - frequency decomposition. This reception came from mathematics and physics. The essence of the method is that the image we view as a set of different contrasts (spatial frequencies). The smallest details of the image - microcontrasts - are high spatial frequencies, the most smooth dimming is the low frequencies. Let's look at the example of this photo, the process of dividing the image into these frequencies and see how we can use this division.

https://imgp.golos.io/0x0/https://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/125649/134002566.1a/0_1afd8d_71eb7c17_XXXL.jpg

Note the defects on the face. We will fight with them.

https://imgp.golos.io/0x0/https://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/114207/134002566.1a/0_1afd8e_31e54a42_XXXL.jpg

Briefly, the algorithm is as follows:

Create a Gaussian blur with such a factor that the details of the image that we need to edit disappear (only low purity remains).
Using image \ apply image - we form a layer with an image consisting of the difference between the original and blurred. (this is a high frequency)
We superimpose the high frequency to the low frequency in the linear light mode.
We edit the image in each of the spatial frequencies.
To begin with, let's create a copy of the background layer. We need this copy, in order to transform this layer with the help of a Gaussian blur.

https://imgp.golos.io/0x0/https://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/108697/134002566.19/0_1afd7d_7466f0ce_XXXL.jpg

https://imgp.golos.io/0x0/https://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/195559/134002566.19/0_1afd7e_399ce15d_XXXL.jpg

https://imgp.golos.io/0x0/https://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/174613/134002566.19/0_1afd7f_ee77b02a_XXXL.jpg

We created a copy of the layer and blurred it with a Gaussian coefficient of 5.0 - this coefficient is selected for each image, since this is exactly the boundary at which the spatial frequencies are separated.

Now we make another layer-copy of the original image.

https://imgp.golos.io/0x0/https://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/197741/134002566.19/0_1afd80_36b58171_XXXL.jpg

Choose from the menu image - apply image

https://imgp.golos.io/0x0/https://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/241830/134002566.19/0_1afd81_59a7b4a9_XXXL.jpg

In the dialog that appears, we need to choose: Layer - here we select the layer that we blurred,
Blending - Substract. It should be noted that at us the Scale should be 2 and Offset - 128.
Click OK and get the difference between the original image and the gaussian blur. Of course, you can get this image in another way. For example, through the High Pass. It's a matter of taste. Although, when subtracting, the result is more accurate.

https://imgp.golos.io/0x0/https://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/196142/134002566.19/0_1afd82_7aed618d_XXXL.jpg

We have two layers. One has a high frequency, the other has a low frequency. Change the upper (with high frequency) blending mode to Linear Light.

https://imgp.golos.io/0x0/https://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/244791/134002566.19/0_1afd83_4cf0fb45_XXXL.jpg

The image has developed and we again have a pimpled model as it was, but its image consists of two layers.

https://imgp.golos.io/0x0/https://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/53145/134002566.1a/0_1afd84_a1c460eb_XXXL.jpg

Now you can start retouching. Whatever it was convenient for us to retouch and had the opportunity to roll back to the original image, if naportachim, create another layer - a copy of the layer with a high frequency.

https://imgp.golos.io/0x0/https://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/195559/134002566.1a/0_1afd85_4d5917c_XXXL.jpg

Make the layering mode of this layer "Normal" and tie it to the original in the clipping mask mode.

https://imgp.golos.io/0x0/https://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/225650/134002566.1a/0_1afd86_2ced7c49_XXXL.jpg

https://imgp.golos.io/0x0/https://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/172684/134002566.1a/0_1afd87_8bd4d2ba_XXXL.jpg

Now you can retouch on this layer (background copy 2) and not be afraid, because you can always delete it and make a new one the same ... or one more, add on top. Retouching in this layer is made a stamp. It is best to make the edge hard. Copy the beautiful texture of the skin to the pimples and, magically, get clean skin.

https://imgp.golos.io/0x0/https://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/49888/134002566.1a/0_1afd88_beca8ba2_XXXL.jpg

After we have done high-frequency retouching, let's turn to the low-frequency component. The low frequency is a black and white drawing. You can change the shape of the face, the body ... To do this, create a new layer in the Normal mode above the layer blurred in gauss.

https://imgp.golos.io/0x0/https://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/98619/134002566.1a/0_1afd89_6ef42eed_XXXL.jpg

In it, we gently, with a soft brush, with a transparency of 10-20%, apply strokes to those places that require correction. Can draw a black and white drawing.

https://imgp.golos.io/0x0/https://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/98619/134002566.1a/0_1afd8a_50e196ac_XXXL.jpg

So, I turned off all the layers and we see slight traces of retouching. Again, it's convenient that in a low frequency you can add multiple layers, with different retouching, that would be easy to remove (disable) it.

https://imgp.golos.io/0x0/https://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/98619/134002566.1a/0_1afd8b_7bd9120d_XXXL.jpg

That's it. We got the required image:

https://imgp.golos.io/0x0/https://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/196486/134002566.1a/0_1afd8c_7e8738a0_XXXL.jpg

Is the model good? How is your moral decay? Well, that is, not moral, frequency! :) and not decay - separation.
