Anyone who knows me will know that I am a big fan of horror movies in general, so it is clear to say that I have watched many horror films, whether good or bad, my favorite franchise in this particular genre is Saw, a franchise that has managed to endure over the years with more than six movies currently. Saw is one of those franchises that it is not advisable to watch randomly since it has its own chronology, so it is always better to watch one by one to understand the whole story which by the way can be quite tangled, especially if you are not fully aware of everything.

A matter of years ago Jigsaw was releasedt in the cinema and after that, the franchise took a hiatus for a few years, It has been until this year that we have finally been able to get something from the franchise and this time it will be the turn to talk about Spiral: From The Book of Saw, which has come out recently this year , a few weeks, this film has been directed by Darren Lynn Bousman who has previously directed Saw II, III and IV of which for me are the best in the entire franchise, soI had a good expectation of Spiral, what is my verdict in the end? Before even going to watch this movie, you should keep in mind that Spiral is not trying to be a continuation of Jigsaw or the main line of Saw, on the contrary, Spiral tries to be its own thing without straying too much of what Saw is, but at the same time taking more liberties.

Spiral: From The Book of Saw begins with a series of murders happening again, the curious thing is that these murders are limited to the police department, these policemen are killed under the oath that they are corrupt, it is here where our protagonist named Zeke Banks, a policeman who managed to unmask a corrupt policeman but whose career has been destroyed little by little because of it, he is in charge of the case and must solve this string of murders that is happening lately with his new partner, who will be the murderer? We will find out that while we watch the movie carefully. Zeke Banks is acted by by Chris Rock, a comedian and screenwriter, it is weird to see someone in charge of comedies be the lead in a horror movie but I think it´s good to try new things, there are other actors who make appearances like Samuel L. Jackson who acts as Zeke's father.

The main idea of Spiral: From The Book of Saw was to give a fresh air to the franchise and I have to say that at least for me it worked, since not being so linked to the main line of films it manages to give refreshing ideas that make the movie feel pretty cool and competent, one of the biggest problems with making a new Saw movie that continues the main line, is that the plot is already very extended and tangled, so writers have to limit themselves to what is already established in Saw, this film by trying to be its own thing without becoming a reboot or something like that manages to get out of those molds and in turn keep the essence of Saw intact, so the whole thing ends up being very interesting.

On this occasion, Spiral From The Book of Saw gives more importance to the detective plot that is developed through the film, I would even say that it focuses more than in other Saw films where the investigation, though they were important, they weren´t the main focus of attention, it reminded me a lot of the first one where the research was an important focus, however, by focusing so much on what I said, it leaves the famous traps aside a bit, there are, of course, but not as numerous as in other movies, even so, it seemed to me that the ones that exist here are quite good and competent, being in my opinion better traps than those already seen in Jigsaw or even in movies like Saw 3D or Saw VI.

The truth is that Saw has always looked interesting to me as a film since it presents various moral dilemmas, such as whether it is okay to murder someone for being corrupt and it is something that in Spiral is latent since all the victims are corrupt policemen who have not thought twice about murdering innocents for their own benefit, knowing this, was it okay to kill them or was it something radical? Those kinds of questions end up resonating throughout Spiral: From The Book of Saw and it is because of this kind of thing and some that I mentioned previously I say that Spiral manages to be cool without killing the essence of Saw. The plot of Spiral: From The Book of Saw is quite competent, I will not say that it is the best of the franchise or the best that has been written but it is good and competent, many of the plot twists that Spiral releases are well-founded and have their explanation, in general, there is nothing in the story that is taken out of nowhere and even if you watch it again, you manage to realize certain details of the plot twists that will happens , the characters are generally competent, they don't tend to do stupid things and they usually do things that are credible for a situation they are in, also Zeke in my opinion has quite a personality as the protagonist of a Saw movie so it is easy to sympathize with his situation and become fond of the character.

In short, watching this film has been a pleasant surprise, it was what I expected and in the end I felt satisfied with the film. Spiral: From The Book of Saw is in a nutshell, an attempt to bring more life to the Saw franchise and in turn give it a fresh air without straying too much of the franchise, Spiral is a fairly competent film that undoubtedly manages to position itself among the best in the franchise at least in my opinion, I would not mind seeing that they continue with this in some way and there is a Spiral 2. I feel that the only way that Spiral can disappoint you is by watching it expecting another Saw from the main line and I warn that it is better not to watch it thinking that way, in short, definitely one of my surprises this year and I would recommend watching it no matter if you are new to the franchise or not.</div>
