 These amazingly beautiful little ducks are a vivid illustration of how to distinguish how parents care for their offspring: they do it together or only one of them participates in the process. There is a simple rule: if the male and the female are very similar, most likely, they take care of the offspring together. For example, in the pairs of storks, ravens, and gray pigeons it is almost impossible to distinguish who is the male and who is the female. In these pairs, both parents feed the chicks.  In these photos we see when it is not. An extremely bright and beautiful male is a sure sign that he is a very mediocre father! When the male does not care about the offspring, he must look for other arguments to convince the female to continue his race and the bright plumage of his main assistant in this difficult task.  This also applies to the male mallard. In mid-November males of Mandarin and Caroline ducks usually start to get ready for a new mating season. They faded and again put on elegant bright plumage.   As you can see in this photo, the female has very modest plumage.
