I normally select my authors carefully as I know their writing style which I enjoy.

I have a few books on my book shelf which I didn't get very far with as they lost me and I couldn't read anymore. But when I come across any questions here on musing that has "book" in it, I can not resist the urge to answer it.

What I did take away, from the question, though, is that you want to know what parts/aspects of a book that when you get to them you don't feel like reading that book anymore? Like what you hate to see in any part of the book that makes you decide the book is bad?

Well for me basically the first thing I hate to see in a book is when an author or writer tries too hard. And they are so easy to spot, so that once you know to be on the lookout for them, you find them pretty easily and it starts to irk you even more than before.

Reason why trying so hard is terrible is because it really doesn't make you work better. It just makes it feel bloated and affected and unnatural as hell.

You find these in books where the writers use elaborate similes and figures of speech and gross exaggerations and big words that they just looked up and inserted. Or they try to use some weird and awkward phrasing they saw in a great writers book and think they automatically have the technical know-how to imitate.

But of course it doesn't work like that at all. Before yoi can do certain things it requires practice. And that's how it is in any field. Before you can be a master you to be an apprentice first. You have to start small. And for God's sake don't be fake. Just be natural. Write naturally. Don't try to work in big words and ornate phrasings in your writings. Just write whats on your mind and write it as clearly and articulately as possible. Simple as that.

Another thing I hate that makes me decide a book is bad is excessive sentimentality in a book.

Some writers believe once you have a book and you include a scene or two where people cry profusely and roll on the floor and lose a child or have people fall in stupid love and kiss all day and etc, the book will automatically be a good book.

This couldn't be farther from the truth.

Extreme overt senseless displays of blown-out affections and emotions like crying and all those things should be kept to as minimal a level as possible And should only be employed where it is absolutely absolutely necessary and unaviodiable.

And the way it is executed should also be watched carefully. Sometimes the way to respond to a loss is not by sharing a river quantity of tears. Perhaps just little emotions like sIlene and tortured indifference might even be more resonating with the audience more than overt over-the-top wailing and crying and rolling on the floor like a maniac just to solicit and steal emotional reactions from your audience.

Books must stay true to their motive. Even if they're fictional. Which is why John Keats wrote in his poem that Beauty is Truth and Truth is Beauty--that is all we know on earth and all we need to know.

Cheers and have a nice day!

bartrobel"}" |
