GNU
(Connochaetes taurinus)
The purpose here is to help you view
That amazing beast that’s called a Gnu.
If one was learned in the ways of the East
One might be more familiar with this Wildebeest.
For that, indeed, is its other name,
Wildebeest or Gnu, it’s just the same.
An animal at home on the South African veldt,
An animal that is often unfairly dealt
An unwarranted reputation for being obtuse,
But it’s only facts on this animal that we’ll introduce!
For to really know a Gnu is rich indeed,
(Provided you’re not in the midst of a stampede!)
The Gnu spreads out in enormous herds
(Don’t forget its name is great for crosswords!)
And whether they move to the east or the west
Depends on where gnu food is at its best.
They like to travel in an enormous bunch,
For lions and tigers like them for lunch!
But if they can remain in the midst of the mob
They can avoid tiger, lion or any thingamabob.
On African veldts isolation encumbers;
Yes, there is safety within large numbers
Offering protection for gnus from attack,
So it’s really best to stick with the pack,
Shunning that tendency to go astray,
Seeking survival for another day!
Perhaps there is a lesson from gnus to learn,
For straying folk to now quickly return
To the centre of their respective groups,
Marching along like orderly troops;
Safe and secure with the deserving thought
That they’re doing, indeed, what they really ought,
Keeping plainly and clearly, well in view
This useful lesson learned from the Gnu.</center>
