Jesus bases ethics on the teaching of love, the kingdom of God is manifested in the love of God, the love of Charity.
John was the disciple most loved by Jesus: "When Jesus saw his mother standing there besides the disciple he loved, he said to her, ´Dear woman here is your son´. And he said to his disciple, ´Here is your mother´. And from then on this disciple took her into his home.", John 19:26-27. 
That is why the apostle puts so much emphasis on the teaching of love;  John in his first letter teaches us a form of the commandment of love: "Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God", 1 John 4:7

When Jesus and the disciples speak to us of love, they refer to Charity, love is a genre. In Greek, each form of love has its own name: eros, philia, Agape. Jesus and his disciple John always describe love by the Greek name "Agape". Agape is the love projected to the whole creation of God.
John tells us several things about charity, that its source is God and that those who love with charity have been born of God and know him.
God is the source of Charity because Charity is a perfection: "Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect", Matthew 5:48. God is the origin of all the perfections that we observe in creation, and we call these perfections spiritual gifts.
Jesus explains to us that to receive charity one must be born again: "Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to Spirit", John 3:6. To be born again, or to be born of the spirit is to receive a heart that knows how to listen, listening is the proper gift of the adult life.
And by this love we know God, because Charity is the origin of eternal life, that is, contemplative activity: "This is eternal life that they know you, the only true God", John 17:3.
Contemplative activity is the meditation focused on the eternal and immaterial truths, eternal life in practical terms is the worship of wisdom. Worshiping wisdom is knowing God: "God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.", John 4:24.
