If anyone knows how much power the good ol' boys can wield behind the scenes, it's @rhondak (no, she didn't write the excerpt posted above). This week I posted reviews of her novel High Kill, a true-crime literary thriller (fiction! really!) which illuminates my motto that the sordid and unbelievable truth is best told in the guise of fiction. 


### What lurks below the surface, 
what happens in our own backyards, unseen, unheard, or ignored, or misconstrued, by us?

One of the clues she turned up was the identity of an anonymous commenter at cold case sites. His books suddenly become unavailable on Amazon after she "outted" him.

I don't know who "John E. Hunter Jr" really is, but he has written numerous books about Iowa people and places - including the now unattainable 14-page story about "Some fun sex with strippers at the Sir Lounge Strip Club"--and under the name of Herb Hunter, he proposed a serial killer with a shoe fetish, and either he or some FBI profiler came up with the red herring of The Harvest Moon Reaper.

Me, be careful?

Thank you!
She wouldn't have given up. I'd face a bullet to find justice, and that's kinda silly, or maybe even melodramatic, or just plain idiotic. That knee-jerk reaction, that passion, may be what got HER killed. Knowing when to back down, when to shut up, is how people stay alive. I guess longevity isn't as high on my list as Truth! Justice!

Carol, indeed, while I was gathering information for High Kill, my author website was hacked and everything I'd ever published about Southwest Virginia disappeared. I had backup copies, of course, but this is what led me to Steem. When I found out the blockchain is indelible, I knew it was the place for me. I'll always believe someone burned by my exposes about Appalachia was responsible for the hack.

I am shocked. (Not.)
Today, after the dust settled a wee bit (long after noon), I picked up High Kill again. Really, the prose is sterling. Your command of Deep POV is stellar. Taylor has her faults, Charles is a god, Eric upstages Taylor at their first meeting and we love him all the more for it, and can't help but love Taylor for recognizing his talent and intelligence. She's a good sport. With a few demons. Erik is amazing. And Karmen, oh man, don't all women know a Karmen? It's soooo gratifying to see a guy look past her at the girl with no make-up and no fashion sense and see the Real Deal. Those song lyrics. Dang. I'm off to keep re-reading. But I gotta say, the parallels to Iowa Cold Cases are startling. As awful as Appalachia might be, y'all got competition. Beneath a veneer of educated civility, man's inner lizard rules in every region of the country...
