There were only a small group of riders when it first started and it took a few years to grow in popularity.There must have been some underhanded dealings in those days.

I didn't imagine it was so hard though. to run despite the fatigue and being afraid of being attacked ... so much admiration for the cyclists of the past

The race was much harder than today as it used to take them 15 or 16 hours to complete one stage. The bicycles would have been heavy and with poor roads this was a race that we can't even to imagine how tough it was.
