I was watching the Ken Burn’s documentary on the Mayo Clinic.  Yes, it was incredible American ingenuity and spiritual insight that made the amazing dream of the Mayo Clinic a reality in rural Minnesota, a remarkable story.  But there is no reason why in the 21st century we shouldn’t have a world-class medical facility in every state in the U.S.  If we truly valued health, science, and the ingenuity possible to cure people, we would have allocated research, infrastructure, and fiscal resources to get this done.  

Imagine a shining beacon of hope, intelligence, and medical modernity within a few hours drive of every U.S. citizen.  Instead we fund war, tax breaks to corporations which ravage resources and leave our country, and social funding for baby boomers who have lived beyond their means.  

Instead of laying a truly American groundwork, actually  harnessing the best of what it could mean to be American instead of continuing with our colonial/imperial empire, we could be creating a system of renewable incentives for world-class, modern health facilities that actually valued human dignity and quality of life.  Instead we have a government backed system of cheap corn and wheat, stacked with indigestible gluten and corn-syrups tearing a diabetes epidemic through our nation. 

If we really valued what medicine had to say, instead of having the truth of healthy foods squashed by the powerful pharma industry, we would be ushering in a new millennium of access to fresh foods, healthy supplements, and personalized vitamin regimens.  Instead, the country will continue to slowly crash until the next revolution binds us to a more humane vision for our destiny.
