In this very recent appearance that I had on @siimland podcast, we've tackled quite a few topics. We began with cold stress or cold exposure and some of its practical aspects. For someone new to this, the practice of exposing oneself to cold temperature stress could have positive health effects. How so? Well, cold exposure triggers biochemical responses such as the release of norepinephrine, increased activity of brown adipocytes, vasoconstriction, and depending on the level of exposure, shivering thermogenesis (which could potentiate and also trigger additional responses). I've been dedicating a lot paper space to cold thermogenesis in my book _Stress and Adaptation in Physiology_, because I've look at it from two perspectives: the research perspective and an experimental perspective (my own experiments). Siim and I also discussed about ketosis and the different variations of intermittent fasting. One IF variation I have not spend too much time on optimizing was one meal a day. I had trouble with it because I had to eat a lot of food in a very small timeframe, which, counter to what one might think, is inconvenient and unpleasant (at least for me). When I did OMAD I was not strictly ketogenic so the volume of food that I consume was higher. I had to eat more than 2-3 pounds of food in that single meal. Things might be easier in terms of OMAD on a keto diet because the energy density of ketogenic foods is much higher per volume compared to non-ketogenic foods. What this means is that I would eat less food (in terms of volume) for the same amount of calories. However, this might be tricky though because one would also have to optimize for nutrient density at the same time of optimizing for energy density. Anyway, Siim and I discuss about all of these topics through the lens of adaptation, which, as I detailed in my book, goes like this: stimulus => response/reaction => adaptation Adaptation is a key facet of life. Had life not have this ability, it might have not been able to thrive in so many different environments on Earth (and possibly beyond Earth). Positive adaptation is dependent of the dose, the frequency, and the duration of the stimulus. Too much of any might make adaptation not possible. Anyway, if you're interested in this stuff, please watch my full discussion with Siim:

___ ###
To stay in touch with me, follow @cristi
___ [Cristi Vlad](http://cristivlad.com) Self-Experimenter and Author

You might be interested in Wim Hof if you have not already found him. The way I understand it is living in 70 deg temps year round might be the leading cause of chronic diseases. Exposing ourselves to cold helps keep the muscles around our blood vessels in shape. https://www.wimhofmethod.com/

I've been interested in staying generally kind of cold since I read about its potential effects on [the development of brown adipose tissue](https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/06/140623091949.htm) - but that seems to be based on long term mild cold. Not sure about acute periods of freezing, although anecdotally I know it's sort of a popular thing nowadays. I think some folks provide a freezing shower service or something - struck me as dangerous... I think I'll just underdress in winter :)

As far as I know, there is evidence that BAT exists and it can develop in adult humans. https://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C5&q=brown+adipose+tissue+human

Oh definitely - the link I posted definitely drew the same conclusion - it's just wasn't clear to me whether long term mild cold is as/more/less effective than acute cold in stimulating BAT development. I'd only ever read about the effectiveness of the former.
