Salt from tears and from the sea

It was a normal day, a bit cloudy; the winds hit the shore and the waves splashed upon her legs. Her hair danced left sometimes, then right. She stood unmoving, in a trance of grief, looking to the horizon, holding a knot in her throat. She wanted to scream, to feel rage, to blame something, but only the sea and their luck were to blame. Bou, her only companion, her savior, her inspiration, the purpose she didn’t know she had in life, had been swallowed by the salt water.

His last moments had been filled with a strong desire to save the little girl whom he had one day taken from a burning village. Fate had brought him to her, someone immune to the disease that had annihilated her whole tribe. What were the chances of this? One in a million were immune, yet a random fisherman had come to Krathin village, had taken little Meijen from the hands of the enraged executioners and had survived to take care of her and see her grow. In future days, she would tell herself that this had been fate’s game, in a time when she would explore and exploit the disease that now haunted her.

But now, her only thoughts were her inconsolable sorrow and the sympathy she felt for the futile caresses of the wind. Bou, Bou... who had walked with her, who had taken her so far and helped her raise a tiny boy into a strong man to take care of her in his absence. Now, the dice had been rolled again and fate’s hands, which had put him there, had taken his life, his precious and unique life.

She finally let a sound leave her mouth, then sobbed uncontrollably, falling on her knees on the rough sand. He was the only father she had, gone in a blink, vanished, and left was the sound of the sea, coming and going, mocking her in its freedom after such a lowly act as sinking their ship. She finally felt a rage without aim, looking for a target, and she could only blame herself, her weakness, her lack of power over fate. She would overcome fate, she told herself. She would create and she would destroy.

Her sobs ended at that thought. She grabbed the sand with her full strength and pressed it till her hand ached, then a bit more, then threw it at the water. Soon, she’d have power, she swore, then turned and walked away to meet her first son. Adopted, but none the less blood related, they would create an empire, even if they did not know that word yet.

What can be said of a soul's flight to find,  like a hungry Terton, the gems that lay under the waste of obligation, guilt and fear...to me thats what you have written here..good they didn't know the proper syntax for empire building....this one could be different,...intriguing story.

And thank you for a great reply. Meijen does have a great soul that allows her to not only survive but to remain ambitious through uncountable years. She's ruthless and despicable by many human standards, but by her own and by her followers', she's admirable.

If this story intrigues you, you'll be happy to know that there's much more to it. I plan on releasing a few sequels to it. The next one probably won't be from the same universe, but the following one or the other two might be.

Hi Sharon

This was a really sad and poignant opening scene. You can feel the girl's pain as she's blaming the sea for losing her protector.

The rest is a really good overview/outline of the actual story. I'd like to see that unpacked with action, scene by scene. 

Maybe balance the inner thoughts with showing events in the burning village, the actual effects of the disease, what people looked like when they got ill, how they suffered, the fear, the executioner, and circle that back to her karmic manifestations. 

I love action that reveals inner thoughts such as:
