Machines produce just fine. Please research the issues deeply. There is no longer a need for cashiers now that Amazon Go exists. Trucks drive themselves. And as AI gets better the production will be done by robots, machines, drones, or some kind of bots.

A dividend would be pure capitalism not socialism. Socialism requires redistribution of wealth from one group to another group. A dividend is the result of the creation of new wealth and does not require redistribution. It also doesn't require taxes. The Alaska Permanent Fund for example is a dividend on oil, which is more geo-libertarianism because oil is a resource of the land itself. In the case of a national dividend it could be from the wealth generated by AI, or automation, or something similar.

If you're worried about socialism then you would want every American citizen to be a part of capitalism. If no one is excluded from capitalism then there will be less of a reason for people to demand socialism. And basic income isn't really about a safety net but more about providing post-industrial or post-human labor income. As technology gets better things get more automated, and as things get more automated the way people will survive has to change, and the purpose of basic income is to allow people enough time to make the transition from a world where human labor is highly valued to a future where almost everything is produced by machines.

Of course if you own intelligent machines then it's like owning land. But if everyone does not have access to shares of that artificial intelligence resource then you have people who will be excluded from capitalism, from the market, with no way to participate, and these people will demand their fair share.

An easy solution? Just give everyone a fair share by citizenship. As things get more automated then income rises for everyone. In this way people will not have to fear a robot or AI replacing their labor because they'll live off the dividends just as shareholders can do today if they hold enough shares in a company.  Because every citizen will get this, it will create a shared stake and allow people to collaborate rather than compete. It will not be possible for the vast majority of people to compete with AI, and people will have to do stuff like sports, entertainment, art, care taking, and other jobs which humans care about but which an AI doesn't and also wont be able to do as well.

People will pay money to watch the UFC because they want to see human beings compete in combat. Humans will still watch sports and still need to be entertained. People receiving basic income will be able to become professional athletes, professional gamers, skateboarders, surfers, writers and artists.
