A group of healthcare companies, including the two pharmaceutical giants Genentech and Pfizer, have now announced the MediLedger project, which will revolutionize the management of pharmaceutical supply chains by using blockchain technology.

The goal of the MediLedger project is to stop the circulation of stolen or counterfeit pills in the pharmaceutical supply chain and prevent them from getting into the hands of patients without knowing the origin of the drugs. As [Fortune reports](http://fortune.com/2017/09/21/pharma-blockchain/), a pilot program of the project is currently underway to track the progress of medicines.

With the application of the blockchain technology, it will be possible for all participants to record their deliveries from the manufacturer via the wholesaler to the pharmacist. Thus every step on the supply chain can be followed. Each time a drug is passed on, a network of computers will guarantee their origin and authenticity. In the future, stolen pills or counterfeits will be made more difficult. This represents a major step for the transparency of the pharmaceutical industry as well as for consumer protection in the distribution of medicines.

The Roche Group, AmerisourceBergen and McKesson Corporation are part of the group of the world's leading pharmaceutical companies that are involved in the implementation of the MediLedger project, in addition to Genentech and Pfizer. So far, the working group has successfully set up a prototype system that registers and verifies drugs on the blockchain. The next step is to develop business models and operational requirements on the blockchain.

H.I.S., one of Japan's largest tour operators, will accept Bitcoin as payment in some sales outlets. This is possible through the cooperation with the largest Japanese Bitcoin exchange, BitFlyer. There will also be special Bitcoin offers for travelers.

H.I.S. has decided to offer Bitcoin payments to increase customer satisfaction and open up new markets. First, the 38 H.I.S. sales offices in the metropolitan area of Tokyo will accept Bitcoin. However, other branches are to follow suit.

The Deutsche Bundesbank published a new [research report](https://www.bundesbank.de/Redaktion/DE/Downloads/Veroeffentlichungen/Monatsberichtsaufsaetze/2017/2017_09_distributed_ledger_technologien.pdf?__blob=publicationFile) focusing on distributed ledger technologies (DLT) and a possible use for payments, securities processing and other areas.

The Deutsche Bundesbank's research team writes in the paper that the technology offers a number of advantages through the distributed storage of data, but also points to the practical challenges of each application.

In the paper, the central bank is hypothesizing that there will be little use of the technology for payment transactions between end users.

The central bank is proposing a more cautious approach to securities settlement applications. This is due to the fact that the Bundesbank had previously conducted a blockchain-based securities trading study with the stock exchange operator Deutsche Börse.

One week ago President Jean Claude Juncker made it clear: "In the last three years, we have made European citizens safer on the Internet". However, last year alone, 4,000 ransom ware attacks were reported and around 80 per cent of all European companies were exposed to at least one cyber attack.

Cyber attacks affect the economy

The impact of these IT attacks has increased by a five-fold over the last four years. For this reason, the European Commission is now proposing to introduce digital certificates which, like in the food sector, are characterized by safe products.

In response to the increasing attacks on IT structures, an information security authority is to be set up. It is to be set up at the European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA).

By this reaction it should be possible in the future also against large scale cyber attacks to be forearmed.

The European Commission also wants to see changes in the area of crypto currencies. This is to reduce fraud with non-cash. The Directive aims to provide the law enforcement authorities with other options, including all the information that can be found through digital currency transactions.
