I had a Commodore 64 and it was popular for a very long time. As far as I'm concerned, it was the best games machine of the 1980s. I'm not sure why Atari faded away faster. Technically the Atari 8-bit computers had very similar capabilities to the Commodore 64. I think Commodore beat them on price when it came out in 1982 and Atari was just never able to get back that market share. During the 16-bit era I always though the Amiga was much better than the Atari ST though I never had either until much later.
