From TNA to IMPACT: Started From the Bottom and Staying There

Total Nonstop Action Wrestling or "TNA" sought to separate itself from World Wrestling Entertainment. It was always pretty small scale, but it was never really able to rise to WWE's level. What set TNA apart though was the 6-sided ring, though this was ditched when Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff were brought over.

TNA was broadcast on SPIKE. SPIKE has been known for edgy shows, therefore TNA could offer a more edgy product, just as WWE had done when RAW was on the same channel years ago. TNA has featured everything from intergender matches to Monster's Ball (hardcore), and even women's steel cage matches (Yeah, TNA did it way before WWE).

What has hurt TNA more than anything though is its bad management. Between repetitive and outright bad storylines, not using talent the right way, and certainly taping shows well in advance don't do any favors. Then there was the misguided attempt at going on the road for tapings. TNA simply didn't have the resources to do this. There was a time when [Toby Keith wanted to buy TNA](http://www.techtimes.com/articles/151721/20160419/toby-keith-bought-tna-wanted-jim-ross-involved.htm) and work with Jim Ross. Had the Carters actually went through with such a deal, the company might have actually done something up to know. Instead though, the Carters operated jointly with Panda Energy and the company limped on.

In terms of talent, TNA has let some of the best in the business go: Samoa Joe, Bobby Roode, Austin Aries, CM Punk, A.J. Styles....Let me ask you something: where are those superstars now? With the exception of CM Punk, all of them are currently in WWE.

Whether you love or hate CM Punk, it is undeniable that he has been one of the best of all time. When he was in TNA though, he was still pretty young and his career wasn't what it would become. I do however think CM Punk could have been the face of TNA and created at least a bit of competition for WWE.

If I were to go through the entire history of TNA though, this article would be way too long. Let's cut to recent to where they have been marred by constant re-branding attempts and after the negotiations with SPIKE fell through, there was a short ill-fated stint on Destination America. After this, IMPACT went to POP TV where it stays currently. In an effort to begin the phasing out of TNA, they went to the below logo.

After being bought by Anthem Sports and Entertainment though, it all changed. Including a new logo (pictured below).

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/bb/Anthem_Impact_Wrestling_logo_2017.jpg

Frankly I don't really understand why this change was made, but I digress. The logo by Anthem is frankly trash. Not only does the bird look ridiculous...I can't even understand what it is supposed to be. An initial look says an owl, but in talking with other people it could potentially be a Phoenix. If the logo can't clearly communicate what it is, then it is objectively bad. If Anthem is truly committed to doing away with the TNA name, then all of the titles but one would have to be redesigned to phase out that logo. The only championship safe

The question becomes could Anthem cover the cost of all of them? Regardless, more changes need to be made if IMPACT hopes to stay afloat, let alone be competition to anyone. The hope is unlikely though as ROH and New Japan have surpassed them despite all of the talent that IMPACT has.

Nice to see a wrestling fan here.

TNA's biggest problem is, and always has been, the marketing.

It never mattered that they had stars like Angle and Sting and Jeff Hardy on their roster, since no one knew about it. They could bring in The Rock, and it would draw a 0.8.

I also find CM Punk to be overrated as a main event star. The buzz he created with the pipebomb was smaller than people think, Money in the Bank 2011 wasn't that big of a hit, and SummerSlam drew worse than the year before.

Sometimes the RAW ratings also dropped when Punk was on TV.

He was a unique cat, he could talk, but I think the internet overstates his importance in the grand scheme of things.
