→ Best RPGS :: Diablo 2

David Craddock on why Diablo 2 is one of the top RPGs of all time:

> Diablo 2’s five heroes are unique. Unless you're lucky enough to happen across a sword with a finite number of Firewall casts or find a piece of armor with a four percent chance of spraying frost nova when you take damage, only the Sorceress has access to those spells. Even if you and I roll the class, odds are good that they’ll be dramatically different. You may hurl fireballs and call down bolts of lightning. I may flip the script and embrace the character’s primary disadvantage—nonexistent aptitude in close-quarters combat—by specializing in Enchant, a skill that imbues weapons with fire damage. Max out Enchant, pump up Strength and Vitality, and my Sorceress can go toe-to-toe with the biggest and bulkiest of Hell’s tough guys. 

> That's how Diablo 2 grabs you. It's easy to pick up, appealing to newcomers who may feel intimidated by more esoteric RPGs. Then it sinks its hooks in you by asking you to think carefully about your character's development as you progress. 

Diablo 2 hit me at just the right time. I was in university and so had a lot of free time and I was a computer science major and so was surrounded by geeks who loves to game. We would spend hours playing every night then would plan character builds during the day. Then the expansion hit and the process started all over again. What an amazing game. LAN parties with D2 were epic!

I tried out Diablo 3 both after it was released and later after the expansion. It was fun, but it just wasn't the same and I didn't really care for it. 

... now I kind of have the urge to play again. Wonder if battle.net still stores D2 characters. Only one way to find out!

Honestly, I wouldn't say it was one of the best either. That "best" tag comes from the article, not from me. But I do have a lot of memories playing and enjoying it.

You liked missed that gamer contest thing I tagged you on.  You ignored it and it’s now weeks later!  Although this is a short gamey post.  :)

I grow more and more certain it was Diablo 2 I played for a time.  Brain is old and so forth.   

You did a comp sci degree?  I didn’t think you were  in IT. Nice little thing to learn about you.  I was given two university offers.  Multimedia or Comp Sci.  I deliberately choice boring Comp Sci because I thought it was a better foundation.  Not that I learnt a thing in uni.  I also decided I’d get along with geeks more so over artsy people.  I met hubby in the Comp Sci course, so I guess it was the right choice.   But sadly I didn’t get invited to any LAN parties. :(  I only hung out with hubby.   Hehehehe

Oh sorry, I didn't see that you tagged me. Sometimes I miss mentions either because I have too many in busy (which is more than 5) and can't be bothered to hit that "see all" button or because I've inexplicably switched to Steemit for a week and unlike Busy they never inform you of anything over there so I miss it all.  Next time you do a gaming post I shall try to catch it! I rarely play games these days. No time and/or I get bored, but I have many memories of enjoying gaming. 

I was a programmer for many years. C++ and an inhouse language the company had created themselves and used. Made pretty good money. Then got burnt out and moved to Japan to be a photographer. Go figure. I didn't get along with Artsy people either until I started up my Buddhist study under a zen master. I didn't get along with other geeks either, unless we both agreed that Picard ruled and that Dune was the best sci-fi book ever. Now I get along with artsy folks, but everyone else thinks I am some kind of strange hippie. Ho hum. 

Your hubby is a lucky guy—there were no girls at all in any of the CS classes I ever took. I had a hardware emphasis (making it somewhat odd that I went into coding) so I  also took a lot of science classes—chem and physics—and there were plenty of girls in those classes, so they were my favorites. hah.

There weren’t that many girls in my course, so we always stood out. Some guys would stare and be dicks. I still remember this one guy l’d pegged as a potential pal. For some demented reason or maybe he was attention seeking, he decided to write on our online student forum that I was his friend. He described my physical attributes in detail! Like wtf?! It was cringey and made me feel like I paid him to write me a flattering dating profile.

Someone replied to this guy’s post and told him to try some dating agency.

Hubby, who was the only other person I knew because he’d kept trying to engage me —I was very awkward and anti-social back then—replied, “she’s also a nice person.”

A point in hubby’s favour, but I was still pissed off at being humiliated like that. So yeah, some guys behaved liked it was a big deal being a girl.

Recognising I was too socially awkward, I chose an IT career where I work with people. I just felt it would be good for me, to challenge myself for growth. My first three IT jobs were for Australian-based Software development companies. Working for a distributor now, so I miss having access to the development team. :(

I like pestering the super geeky quiet developer types. Once they start talking, it’s always interesting. :)

And Dune...I’ve been trying to finish reading that for over 2 years now... it’s not that it’s not good, but I get distracted by the details, I start googling stuff. I can’t finish reading it because it inspired me to write my own alien desert planet. Every time I start to read it, I want to write. I was talking to someone at work about my failure to finish Dune today!

As for that gaming contest I talked about, it was just a tag to you and some others to enter it. I thought you would have some interesting things to add.

I remember starting and stopping diablo 2 so many times. I found I had the same problem with it as every other action rpg, street a while I just didn't enjoy the constant loot drops and levelling and mob control... I do enjoy an in depth more traditional rpg though! That said, I recently had a crack at Van Helsing and that had me gripped for a bit, I really enjoyed the setting.

Diablo 3 is due to release on Switch, if it is a good port, I might give the series another crack!

That is exactly why I didn't enjoy Diablo 3. The loot dropping and leveling is about 50 times what it is in D2. You can play for 30 minutes and level up a dozen times, get dozens of rare drops and even a few uniques. I found it all entirely too much. The skinner box was showing and I didn't enjoy it.
