**A Little Nostalgic History**

Yes, I remember it well! I was never fortunate enough to have my own Game Boy so I pestered the life out of other people to let me borrow theirs. I bet you had your own.

The original Game Boy was released April 21 1989 in Japan by Nintendo and lasted till 2003. It sold over 118 million units in that period of time. By 1990 it had hit North America and Europe. Everyone seemed to want one!

As you'll remember from the pic, the Game Boy was very simple to operate. On/off and two game modes, A and B. A really easy to use cross-shaped button allowed you to direct play. There was a select button too but choices were limited by today's standards.

Battery operation meant you couldn't play it non stop. That gave people a rest from it's loud, incessant bleeps as the games were played.

I was so addicted that I used to visit stores with the sole intention of using the display model to try out new games. I had no money to buy anything, ha. There was often a queue at the display stand shown above.

My inquisitive nature meant I couldn't resist opening up one I found thrown away. It was pretty simple inside.

**Games, Games, Games**

The Game Boy games were totally absorbing because you played mainly by yourself although some lucky gamers had a special cable to link two Game Boys together.

I remember Game Boy Tennis and Super Mario Land but it was really all about Tetris for me.

You probably know that Tetris is a tile matching game. It was invented by Alexey Pajitnov. The speed that the tiles drop increases as you progress. I've known players to scream with frustration when they can't keep up!

Eventually Nintendo retired the original Game Boy to make way for its successor, the Game Boy Advance (GBA).

Yeah, the Game Boy lives on and so it should!
