Friends hope you all are doing well. My today’s post is related to water pollution of Bangladesh. It is one of the major problems of the country now. Bangladesh is called the country of rivers. As the pollution severity is very high, the rivers are being dumped every day. Consequently, the rivers are dying. Though there are various pollutions, my focus on today’s post will be water pollution.  Water is the main element for our living being. People, animal or plants cannot survive without water. You all may know that 71% is water of this earth and remaining 29% is soil. Among this 29% water, we can use 3-4% only. Remaining are either salty water of ocean or in an ice form. Are we taking care of this limited water? In many cased the answer is NO. Specially, in Bangladesh the situation is the worst. If you look at the river, it is self explanatory. Below pictures are from a dying river due to pollution. I took these few days back.   Bangladesh is a growing country. The major revenue source of the country is garments and textiles. As a result, the industries are growing very fast here. When there are high number of industries, the pollution is also high. At present in Bangladesh there are approximately 1500 mills and factories. Below information from Dhaka tribune- > As per the BTMA, there are 430 yarn manufacturing mills, 802 fabrics manufacturing mills, and 244 dyeing-printing finishing mills in Bangladesh, along with 32 denim fabrics manufacturing mills and 22 home textile manufacturing mills. Textile industries are high risk for water pollution. If you go through the textile making process, you will find different steps like bleaching, dyeing, washing and so many. After all these process, the waste water is going directly into the water body. Below pictures are from textile wet process discharge areas. It is going to the environment.   Be reminded that, all these waste water from textile industries are very much harmful for human as well as for other animals and fishes. Many times it was observed that waste water contains hazardous elements like Lead, Cadmium, Arsenic, Chromium, Mercury, Nickel. Some organic compounds like Azo dyes, Phthalates, PFCs, APEOs, Carcinogenic dyed, Flame retardants were also found in waste water. These all are very much toxic and harmful substances which can cause skin cancer, mental disorder, lunch cancer and even death. I am just giving one example of Phathalate compound from above all the hazards substances. Phthalates compounds are used in textile industries to make the plastics and rubberised prints soft. These Phthalates are responsible for abnormal growth of children. If the children take these compounds inside the body, normal growth of them will be hampered. All the above compounds or elements have some kinds of hazards signs to human body. Apart from textile there are other industries which waste make the water polluted. Leather industries are one of those. Leather industries make not only water but also air pollution. There is a compound called Cr (VI) which is very much harmful for human body. You can find the picture of sludge/mud from leather industries. The colour of the sludge is not good. There is a high probability to get heavy metals from it.  There are domestic waste which makes the water polluted as well. The water which we are using at home, disposing that to different water body without proper treatment. This is creating the water pollution.  Then, what is next? Should we stop industrialisation? Then how can we grow? No, we should not stop industrialisation rather make solutions to stop this pollution. There are ways to stop water pollution. Water treatment plant is the best solution. Waste water from mills and industries will be treated through water treatment plants and then only to be discharged to the environment. You might have heard about ZDHC roadmap 2020. It means Zero Discharge of Hazardous Compounds. As per this guideline, no mills and factories are allowed to discharge hazardous compounds to the environment. Different brands are monitoring this through third party reports. The matter of hope that many factories in Bangladesh are establishing waste water treatment plants and the nation will be getting result in near future from it. Here are some pictures of water treatment plants.     The government can play a significant role here. They should impose all the factories to set up waste water treatment plants in every factories.
