Southern White Rhino

This is a photo of a Southern White Rhino that a took a few years ago while on a trip to South Africa. I went out on a safari and stood between the rhino and some poachers. Needless to say, the poachers stood down and I’m able to tell you about my story. Just Kidding! I was standing between the Rhinos and a sturdy enclosure at the Baltimore Zoo. In truth though, these beautiful animals are still being hunted for their horns. Conservationists even tried capturing them in the wild and removing the horns to stop poachers from hunting and killing them. They found that they were still being killed by poachers who had spent time tracking the rhino only to find the animal had no horn to poach. Not much, in the wild, threatens the white rhino other than humans. At one time they were critically endangered but have made a big comeback due to the efforts of Conservationists. Did you know that the southern white rhino isn’t really white? They got their name by mistake when English speakers misinterpreted when Afrikaans speakers said “wiet” (meaning wide) as white. The Afrikaans were referring to the wide squared-off upper lip of the Southern white rhino not their color. Now you know!
