Back to the subject now, I've been living in a van for a while, and that was cool. 1,000 times better than sleeping in the street, I'm sure.

This sounds like a start to a great idea. I don't think this will solve all the issues, but this is definitely a step in the right direction from what I can tell.

Some issues are soo difficult too solve.. If you look from different views it's a tragedy for everyone..

City officials are absolutely inept (doesn't matter which city) and can be expected to fail in every endeavor, especially when they attempt to 'protect' the less fortunate.

What drives me crazy is when 'officials' will crack down on Everyday People basically doing their jobs for them, it's probably a way to make themselves look less incompetent, as if everyday people started fixing problems they've struggled with for decades people might start to realize they (city officials) are absolutely useless.

But then again, they probably just need more tax money and then everything will be okay...

If someone's sleeping in an RV, also called a motor home, aren't they technically at home and not homeless? Why cops want to convince people to leave a place safe from the elements like snow and rain to sleep on park benches is strange to me.

its getting bad here in the UK to, I give sandwiches and drinks when I can but we are not supposed too, everyone has the right to food and somewhere safe and warm to sleep.  makes me mad

Shelter is basic human right so Government and authorities should plan to build homes or give incentives for homeless.

We have the same problems here with bylaws and city officials that seem to just pass the buck and blame someone else whenever something happens ! We have had a 0 % vacancy rate for a long time here in Kelowna which brings on very expensive rents causing even more homelessness , its a never ending circle ! They are just now starting to build more condos and apartments , but it will still be years before this has ant effect at all ! And some do live in RVs as well ! winters are even worse up here in Canada with not enough space anymore in homeless shelters ! We need to start finding ways to put lower income people into homes instead of spending tax payers dollars on finding ways to make life harder on them !! Great post my friend ! Upped and Resteemed !!

Yes, working to __make sure that people without land lack shelter__ going into the winter months is definitely humane.

Using tax monies to do so (in the form of salaries paid to those working the programs and those disposing of usable RVs) is definitely __a proper use of the peoples taxes__.

Maybe some people in the Portland Oregon area will see this as an opportunity and set up programs right in the same places to hook up homeless people with used RVs.

I doubt it will happen... but it sounds like the perfect event for pairing up the homeless with some decent shelter.

Organize and pitch in to buy an empty city block or a few acres just out of town somewhere and you have the start of a real solution... until the city officials get wind of you helping people and/or the RV Camping businesses start complaining.

Last summer I lived in the old growth in a VW pickup truck, dodging the state who wanted me out of the woods.  The local sherrifs, who I didn't dodge, saw that I was stocking the campsite with firewood, cleaned up all the trash, and kept it nice for other folks (when I dodged the state guys, I moved to different camps), so they brought me food ;)

Last fall my truck broke, and it took 5 months to fix, which I spent living in a tool trailer I built from used bedframes, scrap building materials, and a 1939 Ford pickup axle, parking it on a vacant lot and paying $100 for power from a neighbor.  The Tillamook County Code Enforcement officer was nice, but his owners were NOT pleased.

I began rehabbing trailers in a park nearby, and bought one for myself for $100, which I now live in, and am rehabbing.  In the meantime I've been helping folks hereabouts with their electrical, plumbing, and roofs (mostly for chocolate chip cookies.  I'll do a LOT of work for fresh chocolate chip cookies =D) and today the manager came by and thanked me for helping folks.

Made me feel appreciated!  Quite the opposite to what Portland is doing.  

I would live under a bridge any day, before sleeping in a shelter.  Many of them are almost jails - in fact, some of them ARE jails, with empty cells where they allow 'guests' to take up space.

Old RVs are exactly the solution to the homeless problem - but space rent - and sometimes rental agreements - is an issue for folks unable to work, for whatever reason.  I am able to work, and, like I did last week, take an old broken trailer, fix it, and sell it cheap to folks about to be homeless, but not everyone can.

It's a lot cheaper to plunk down $400/month space rent for an old RV given to somebody homeless than it is to house them in a jail - and everyone will be happier.

Maybe an outfit like Habitat for Humanity, except to rehab RVs and trailers that people donate to the homeless, can make this happen, in conjunction with a source of funding for space rent/power for those that can't make the rent, could help a lot of folks in tough spots, and keep non-criminals out of jail.

I really feel it is the right solution, because jails for the homeless is <i>definitely</i> the wrong one, and that's pretty much what's offered presently, even if it's jails that are run by religious organizations that make you attend sermons before meals, and sleep in a barracks, and lock you out if you're not there by 7pm, etc...

Even that is better than the FEMA barges!
