Computerized Axial Tomography

Computerized axial tomography or CT, also known as a scanner or CT (computed tomography), is a diagnostic test that, through the use of x-rays, allows radiographic images of the interior of the organism to be obtained in the form of transverse cuts or, if necessary, in the form of three-dimensional images.

A CT scan is a test that combines the use of x-rays and a computer to produce detailed images of the body. A CT scan shows details of the bones, muscles, fat, and organs. CT scans are more detailed than standard x-rays.

In standard x-rays, a beam of energy is directed at the part of the body being studied. A plate behind the body area captures the variations of the energy beam after it passes through the skin, bone, muscle, and other tissues. Although your health care provider can get a lot of information with standard x-rays, there are not many details that can be obtained from internal organs and other structures.

In a CT scan, an x-ray beam moves in circles around the body. This allows many different views of the same organ or structure. The x-ray information is sent to a computer that interprets the x-ray data and presents it in two-dimensional (2D) form on a monitor.

CT scans can be done with or without contrast. Contrast is a substance that is given orally or injected intravenously (IV) so that the particular organ or tissue being examined can be seen more clearly in the study image.

Bone CT scans can provide more detailed information about bone structure and tissue than standard bone x-rays. CT scans provide more detailed information to health care providers about bone injuries or disease.

Why would I need a bone CT scan?

A bone scan may be used to evaluate bones; soft tissues, such as cartilage, muscles, and tendons; and joints for damage, injury, fractures, or other problems. A CT scan may be done when another type of exam, such as an x-ray or physical exam, does not provide enough information.

Your health care provider may recommend a CT scan of your bones, joints, or soft tissues for other reasons.

What are the risks of a bone CT scan?

You may want to ask your health care provider about the amount of radiation used during the CT scan procedure and the risks related to your particular situation. The radiation from a CT scan varies, but can be up to 100 times greater than a regular chest x-ray. It is a good idea to keep a record of your history of radiation exposure, such as CT scans and other types of previous x-rays, so that you can inform your health care provider. The risks associated with radiation exposure may be related to the cumulative number of examinations or x-ray treatments over a long period of time.

If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, tell your health care provider. Exposure to radiation during pregnancy can cause birth defects. If a bone CT scan is needed, special precautions will be taken to reduce the fetus' exposure to radiation.

Breastfeeding mothers should check with their provider to find out if they need to stop breastfeeding for a while after receiving the contrast material. Currently, the recommendations on this point are contradictory.

If contrast material is used, there is a risk of an allergic reaction to the material. If you have an allergy or sensitivity to any medication, contrast dye, or iodine, tell your health care provider. Studies show that most people will not have an adverse reaction to the contrast material. However, tell your health care provider if you have ever had a reaction to a contrast dye or if you have any kidney problems. Having a known allergy to shellfish is not a contraindication for using contrast material.

Tell your health care provider if you have any kidney problems. In some cases, contrast dye can cause kidney failure. People with kidney disease are more likely to have kidney damage after exposure to contrast dye.

Tell your health care provider before you apply the IV contrast material if you take metformin (diabetes medicine). The reason is that it can cause an infrequent condition called metabolic acidosis. If you take metformin, you will be asked to stop taking it 48 hours after your CT scan. A blood test may be needed before you can start taking metformin again.

There may be other risks depending on your specific condition. Remember to talk to your health care provider about any concerns you may have before the procedure.

How do I prepare for a bone CT scan?

-Your health care provider will explain the procedure to you and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.
-If your CT scan involves the use of contrast dye, you will be asked to sign a consent form authorizing the procedure. Read the form carefully and ask questions if anything is unclear.
-Let the technologist know if you have ever had a reaction to any type of contrast material, or if you are allergic to iodine.
-Tell your health care provider about all the medications (prescription and over-the-counter), vitamins, herbal medicines, and supplements you take.
-It is usually not necessary to fast (stop eating) before a CT scan, unless a contrast dye will be used. Your health care provider will give you special instructions in advance if contrast will be used and if you must stop eating and drinking before the procedure.
-Tell the technologist if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant.
-Let the technologist know if you have body piercing in your chest or abdomen.
-Depending on your medical condition, your health care provider may ask for some other specific preparation.
-If you are claustrophobic, talk to your health care provider about taking any medications that will help you.

A great invention and use of technology. As ever, it appears to have it's risks.

Yes, of course, but when necessary, the risk/benefit ratio is weighed in favour of the benefit. Greetings my friend.
