DIY | ecoDesigns Trainees learn how to make pillows from Textile Waste
Textile upcycling
Today was a super awesome training day at @ecodesigns and we are glad that all our trainees and trainers acquired the skills of making children's pillows from textile waste.
The training was facilitated by @mr-greens and was attended by 13 trainees of ecoDesigns, 02 guests and the 02 Training Directors.

#### What do you need to make Children's eco-pillows?
![IMG_20190626_135607554_PORTRAIT.jpg](https://files.steempeak.com/file/steempeak/ecodesigns/VvLpcr4c-IMG_20190626_135607554_PORTRAIT.jpg)

You need a measureing tape, glue, ruler, scissors, marker, textile offcuts and other soft-stuffing material for the pillow. In our case, we used synthetic sponge to add to our textile offcuts.

#### How to make the eco-pillows
- Chop your textile offcuts and sponge into small pieces and mix them together.
![IMG_20190626_141832362.jpg](https://files.steempeak.com/file/steempeak/ecodesigns/3EChl4Qi-IMG_20190626_141832362.jpg)

- Measure, mark and cut your sponge into your desired pillow dimensions.
![IMG_20190626_134438356.jpg](https://files.steempeak.com/file/steempeak/ecodesigns/LxBQFeIB-IMG_20190626_134438356.jpg)

- Use the glue to join the edges of your pillow
![IMG_20190626_141659040.jpg](https://files.steempeak.com/file/steempeak/ecodesigns/qj2DKLWj-IMG_20190626_141659040.jpg)

- Once done, stuff the pillow with your textile offcuts/sponge mixture, weight it and seal it.

Yes, we effectively trained the women and girls in the production of pillows from textile waste.
#### The environmental benefits of ecoDesigned Pillows
@ecodesigns eco-pillows measure 35cmX35cm and 40cmX20cm and weigh 0.5 pounds and 0.6 pounds respectively. For every pillow we make, we stop 0.3 – 0.4 pounds of textile waste from getting into the environment.

For every 3 pillows we make that contain 1 pound of textile waste, we save approximately 3 – 4 pounds of greenhouse gases that accelerate climate change.
#### Why make children's pillows
1. There are no children pillows in our local markets
2. Children need pillows to raise their heads so that if they choke while sleeping, the fluids will not go up to their heads.
3. Babies need special cylindrical pillows to support them to sleep sideways especially when they are young and these kind of pillows are not found in the market
4. To reduce the amount of textile pollution in the city of Bamenda

A nice "how to" post - sweet. Would love to learn more about the trainees you work with - maybe tell us about some that have started their own businesses, or what they hope to do with the training you give them? This is a really lovely and important project.
