새우는 왜 등이 굽었을까?
Why does Shrimp has crooked back?

바닷속 깊은 곳에는 용왕님이 다스리는 용궁마을이 있었어요.
Deep in the sea, there was an underwater village where the Dragon King ruled.

용궁마을에 사는 물고기들은 모두 예의 바른 친구들이었죠.
The fishes in the village were all polite friends.

단 한 명. 말썽꾸러기 딱총새우, 새요를 제외하고 말이에요.
Except one. The naughty Snapping shrimp, Seyo.

새요는 인사를 하는 게 너무 싫었어요.
Seyo didn’t like to bow when saying hello.

허리를 굽혀 인사하는 것보다 딱총으로 친구들을 골려주는 게 더 재미있었거든요. Instead of bowing, it was more fun to trick friends by shooting firecracker with his claws.

물고기들은 새요 때문에 너무 속상했어요. Other fishes were really upset of him.

그래서 용왕님을 찾아가 불만을 털어놓았지요.
So they went to the Dragon King and complained.

“용왕님, 새요는 어른을 만나도 인사를 하지 않습니다. 당장 버릇을 고쳐 놓아야 합니다.”
“Dear Dragon King, Seyo doesn't bow and say hello to adults. We need to fix his habits right away."

“용왕님, 새요의 딱총 때문에 물고기들이 다쳤습니다. 새요의 집게를 묶어 놓아야 합니다.”
“Dear Dragon King, the fishes were hurt by Seyo's firecracker claws. We need to tie up his claws.”

물고기들의 투정에 용왕님은 직접 새요를 찾아가기로 했어요.
By these many complaints, the Dragon King decided to visit Seyo.

용궁을 나와 길을 걷던 용왕님은 물줄기를 내뿜는 고래를 만났어요.
As he walked out of the palace, the Dragon King met a whale that spouted water through its blowhole.

“용왕님, 안녕하세요.”
고래는 예의 바르게 인사했어요. 
“Hello~ Your highness Dragon King.” 
The Whale said politely.

기분이 좋아진 용왕님이 
파랑~ 파랑~ 파라랑~! 
하고 마법을 부렸어요.
The King, feeling better, and said, "Parang! Parang! Pararang!!" and did a magic trick.

그러자 고래가 내뿜은 물줄기 사이로 아름다운 무지개가 만들어졌어요. 
Then, a beautiful rainbow was created through the stream that the whale spouted.
무지개를 보고 물고기들이 몰려와 즐겁게 어울릴 수 있었지요.
As the fishes saw the rainbow, they gathered around and enjoyed it.

“우와~ 정말 아름다워요. 감사합니다.”
“Wow~ It’s wonderful. Thank you very much.”

고래는 푸~ 푸~ 물줄기를 뿜어내며 용왕님께 감사 인사를 했어요.
The Whale thanked the Dragon King with streaming water Pow~ Pow~.

고래와 헤어진 용왕님은 다시 길을 나섰어요. 
After saying goodbye to whale, the King went his way again.

잠시 후, 산호 사이에서 숨바꼭질을 하는 문어를 만났어요.
A moment later, he met an octopus playing hide-and-seek between the coral.

“용왕님, 안녕하세요.“ 
문어는 고래처럼 예의 바르게 인사했어요. 
“Hello~ Your highness Dragon King.” The Octopus said politely as the Whale.
 
이번에도 용왕님은 
파랑~ 파랑~ 파라랑~! 
하고 마법을 부렸어요.
This time also the King did the magic trick "Parang! Parang! Pararang!!" 

그러자 문어의 피부 색깔이 알록달록 바뀌었어요. 
Then, the octopus' skin color changed colorfully.

산호 속에 꼭꼭 숨을 수 있게 된 문어는 물고기들과 재미있게 어울릴 수 있었지요. 
So the octopus was able to hide in the coral and could have fun with others.

“우와~ 정말 신기해요. 감사합니다.”
문어는 피부 색깔을 바꾸며 용왕님께 감사 인사를 했어요.
“Wow~ It’s really amazing. Thank you.”
Said Octopus chaging his skin color.

문어와 헤어진 용왕님은 다시 길을 나섰어요.
After saying goodbye to Octopus, the King went his way again.

한참을 걸은 후에 새요를 만날 수 있었지요.
After a long walk, the King could meet Seyo.

새요는 커다란 집게발로 딱총을 쏘며 친구들을 괴롭히고 있었어요.
Seyo was bothering his friends by shooting them with his big claws.

용왕님을 보고도 인사하지 않았어요. 
He didn’t even say hello to the King.

“새요야. 물줄기를 뿜어내던 고래도, 산호 사이에 숨어 있던 문어도 예의 바르게 인사를 하였는데 너는 왜 인사를 하지 않느냐?”
용왕님이 물었어요.
“Seyo, The Whale spouting water, and the octopus hiding among corals, all greeted me politely. But why don't you bow to me?”
said the King.

“인사하는 건 재미없어요. 나는 딱총 쏘는 게 더 재미있단 말이에요.”
새요가 말했어요.
“Bowing is boring. It’s more fun to shoot firecracker!”

그리고는 재빠르게 도망가면서 딱총을 쏘아댔죠.
Then he quickly ran away and shooting.

“새요야. 친구들을 괴롭히는 건 나쁜 짓이란다. 그만두어라.”
용왕님이 새요를 말렸어요.
“Seyo, it's bad to bully your friends. Stop it." said the Dragon King.

“싫어요, 싫어. 나는 계속 딱총을 쏠 거야!”
"No, No way! I'm going to keep shooting!“ 

새요가 도망치며 딱총을 쏘았는데, 그만 용왕님의 얼굴에 맞고 말았어요.
Seyo escaped while shooting, but it was hit by the King’s face.

“네 이놈. 말썽꾸러기 새요야. 너에게 벌을 줘야겠다.”
“You naugthy, trouble maker! I’m going to punish you.”

화가 난 용왕님은 
파랑~ 파랑~ 파라랑! 
하고 마법을 부렸어요.
Angry King did the magic trick "Parang! Parang! Pararang!!" 

그러자 새요의 등이 점점 구부러지기 시작했어요.
Then Seyo’s back began to bend.

아무리 등을 펴려고 애써도 소용이 없었어요.
No matter how hard he tried to straighten his back, it didn't work.

그때서야 새요는 후회했지만, 다시 되돌릴 수는 없었지요.
Only then Seyo regreted but he couldn’t turn it back.

그 후로 새요는 평생 등이 굽은 채로 살 게 되었어요.
Since then, Seyo lived his whole life with his back crooked.

구부러진 등을 볼 때마다 지난날을 반성했어요.
Whenever he saw his back, he regreted the past.

이제 새요는 더 이상 친구들에게 딱총을 쏘지 않아요. 
그리고 누구보다 먼저 인사하는 착한 새요가 되었답니다.
Now he's not shooting his friends anymore and became a good kid who says hello before anyone else.

새우 요리를 먹다가 등이 구부러진 모습을 보고 동화를 쓰게 되었어요!! 영감을 얻는 장면이 참 거시기 하네요 ㅎㅎㅎ 
딱총 새우는 커다란 집게발로 충격파를 발생시켜 물고기를 기절 시킨 후 잡아 먹는 독특한 생물입니다. 특이한 모습에 반해서 주인공으로 선정했고요. 새요는 새우의 뜻하는 우리나라의 옛말 중 하나인데 어감이 좋아서 주인공 이름으로 사용하게 되었어요.
예의 바른 용궁 마을의 말썽꾸러기 딱총 새우. 어쩌다가 등이 구부러졌는지 한 번 확인해 보세요~^^
