Milestone: €500 worth of solar energy in 2018

As mentioned earlier, I like to share some milestones of my solar system. Today is such a day, since I reached a nice financial milestone for this year.

# Earlier milestones
That 2018 is a great year for solar energy in The Netherlands has been made clear in some previous posts. At the end of September I for instance already [surpassed my yearly production record](https://steemit.com/solar/@erikklok/2018-officially-my-best-solar-year) and I reached (overall) monthly records first in [May](https://steemit.com/energy/@erikklok/best-month-for-solar-ever) and then in [July](https://steemit.com/energy/@erikklok/solar-record-in-the-pocket).

# Current milestone
This, combined with the increased price of electricity, made it possible that I reached the next milestone just yesterday: my solar system produced energy that is worth €500 this year. That means I earned back about 1/8th of the systems upfront costs in the course of one year. Given the fact that the electricity prices are expected to increase even more, that means I will be able to "pay off" my system in a shorter than expected time (I was aiming for 10 years). Awesome!

# Next milestone
Next milestone should be producing 2,500 kWh in one year. Since I'm now on 2,413 kWh, it should be possible to reach that somewhere in November. I'll keep you updated!

We already passed the 2500kWh on the yearly basis.
As you already know this is already good for 1100€ in green certificates! So the investment we had to make earlier this year with a new transformer are already paid back!

Great to hear you've already got that paid back. Sometimes I wish I lived in Belgium as well. In general however The Netherlands is not that bad at all.

I'm also thinking about some solar panels on the roof of my house.
But there are three things I'm still uncertain about:
1. Will I stay here long enough to have positive ROI (10 years?)?
2. Is it an advantage that one side of the roof is heading to the east and the other to the west? I could put panels on both sides but they only produce half of what is possible?
3. What will be the cost of it? I still have a fuse box with these old fuses you need to put in like a light bulb. Screwed - not switched :)

With questions 2 and 3 I can help, nr 1 should be something you decide yourself. 
2: the yeild is about 10 to 15 percent less when your system faces East or West compared to South, so the difference is not too much. In total you could hence get more kWh if you use both sides compared to only one comparable South facing roof. Advantage when you use both sides is that you have a more balanced production over a longer period of the day. 
3: I paid about €1.33 per Watt peak (everything included and excluding VAT (which can be reclaimed at the Belastingdienst)). It depends how much you use in an average year now how big your system should be. In general the recommendation is to produce about 80% yourself, but you can also go a bit bigger if you expect to get an electric car in the near future.

If you, for example, use 3000 kWh a year. You would want about 2400 kWh of production. You need a system then that is about 3000 Wp (i.e. 10 panels of 300 Watt). That should cost about €4,000-€4,500 and should save you about €525 yearly (2,400 x €0.22) on your energy bill.
