Lonnie Liston Smith & The Cosmic Echoes: Donald Smith (tenor sax, flute), David Hubbard (tenor sax, soprano sax, flute), Lonnie Liston Smith (piano), Cecil McBee (electric bass), Art Gore (drums), Lawrence Killian (congas, percussion) and Michael Carvin (percussion). From the album Expansions (1974).

In 1973 Smith eventually founded his own band Lonnie Liston Smith and the Cosmic Echoes with George Barron on tenor and soprano saxophones, Joe Beck on guitar, Cecil McBee on double bass, David Lee, Jr. on drums, James Mtume and Sonny Morgan on percussion, Badal Roy on tabla (small Indian drums) and Geeta Vashi on tanpura. They played a combination of soul, funk, post-bop and atmospheric jazz fusion, signed with record producer Bob Thiele’s Flying Dutchman label and published their first album Astral Traveling (1973), where they share their spiritual interests and five of the six tracks are by Smith. From then on he had more time to compose influenced by the music of John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Charles Lloyd, Yusef Lateef, Roland Kirk and McCoy Tyner. However, the group also explored occasionally rhythm and blues, rock and pop.

In Cosmic Funk (1974) Smith brought in his brother Donald as a singer and the album is characterized by soft vocals, lyrics with peace messages, long instrumental passages, funky electric bass lines and light percussion. It was followed by Expansions (1975), the most important work of his career, in which the songs are jazzy, open, with a lot of rhythm and funky moments. Then came Visions of a New World (1975) with a more relaxed and emotional rhythm; Reflections of a Golden Dream (1976), which is closer to funk; Renaissance (1977), which is a nice hymn to love and understanding; and Live! (1978), which registers a 1976 concert at Smucker’s Cabaret in New York.

In 1978 the Cosmic Echoes, whose line-up had been renewed several times, switched to Columbia Records, with which they published Loveland (1978), elegant and commercial, but with much creativity. While the album was well received by rhythm and blues, crossover jazz and jazz fusion fans, Smith had long since lost his jazz followers, who accused him of having abandoned his roots. Also in 1978 the band recorded Exotic Mysteries, whose song “Space Princess”, written by the young electric bassist Marcus Miller discovered by Smith, became very popular, and “Quiet Moments” was a smooth jazz landmark for a long time. In 1979 came A Song For The Children and in 1980 Love Is the Answer, in which the group continues to balance the artistic and commercial aspects despite the constant coming and going of new musicians. The compilation album The Best Of Lonnie Liston Smith also went on sale.
