# The book of James


### James 5:1-6 5 Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you! 2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. 3 Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days. 4 Indeed the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out; and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth.[a] 5 You have lived on the earth in pleasure and luxury; you have fattened your hearts as[b] in a day of slaughter. 6 You have condemned, you have murdered the just; he does not resist you.

* **It's foolish to gather treasures in the last days.**
The point that James makes here is that one's attitude towards your belongings is radically influenced by the fact that we live in the 'last days'.
To gather treasures, more than you need, are foolish in light of the corruption of wealth as well as the proximity of the second coming. '(Matthew 6 32-33). More than this can bring you into temptation of injustice, wealth and loyalty. It is therefore double foolish to gain this wealth in an unfair manner by keeping back the wages of the labourers and then living lushly and loosely with it.

### James 5:7-11 Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain. 8 You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. 9 Do not grumble against one another, brethren, lest you be condemned.[c] Behold, the Judge is standing at the door! 10 My brethren, take the prophets, who spoke in the name of the Lord, as an example of suffering and patience. 11 Indeed we count them blessed who endure. You have heard of the perseverance of Job and seen the end intended by the Lord—that the Lord is very compassionate and merciful. 12 But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath. But let your “Yes” be “Yes,” and your “No,” “No,” lest you fall into judgment.[d]

* **Be patient in suffering.**
James is writing here to them how to tolerate the suffering they experience. He encourages them with two qualities of God. One is the fact that the Second Coming of the Lord is near and that they can steal their hearts with this mind. The other is the fact that this Lord is also the Judge who has not only heard what happens but will act and correct. He reminds them of the ultimate purpose of the Lord with Job who experienced blessing in his perseverance during this trials. This must inspire them to be patient in suffering.

James advises his people to live with integrity (cf. Matthew 5 33-37). It's never necessary to swear because one's yes and no must be meant.

### James 5:13-20 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Confess your trespasses[e] to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. 17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. 18 And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.

* **Pray with faith - it's powerful and effective!**
If you are suffering, you must pray. If you are cleansed, you must sing. If you are sick, the elders should pray for healing and forgiveness. If you are sinful towards each other, it must be confessed and prayed for it to be sorted out, 'healthy'.
 'The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective.'
 And remember, Jesus is the Lord, as James already in James 1:1 confirm that Jesus is the Lord - the one who has authority over everything. Jesus is the ruler of power - The One who has power over everything. Jesus is the one who comes again and who will reward our patience. Jesus is the Judge - The One who not only hears but will act to correct things. Jesus is one who is full of compassion - the one who listens to us. Jesus is the one who gives healing - that's why it can be prayed for. Jesus is also the one who forgives - so we can confess our sins to one another and pray for one another, for such prayer is powerful and effective.

### With the Lord Jesus Christ, every Christian can endure till the end and Jesus will make a way in every circumstance.
