#### Dear Steemit friends, lovers of Italian football,


After last night's match between **Atalanta** and **Real Madrid**, many people this morning on the Italian sports newspapers have noticed the often not so respectful treatment that the international referees reserve to the Italian teams, when they are involved in the European competitions.

It's always curious to notice how, especially when the **Champions League** and **Europe League** enter the knockout phase, the Italian teams involved are practically never given preferential treatment in case of doubtful episodes, at the limit of the rules and how sometimes (it's the case of last night) they even have to put up with referee's stances able to distort and completely upset the results of the matches.

As proof of this, we don't need to go back to the disastrous refereeing of the Slovenian **Skomina** in the return semi-final between **Roma and Liverpool**, which in fact seriously compromised the Giallorossi's chances of reaching the final, or to the famous "rubbish bin instead of the heart" mentioned by **Gigi Buffon** on the occasion of the more than dubious penalty awarded to **Real Madrid** in the second leg of the quarter-final against **Juventus** in 2018, You don't need to go back to the disastrous refereeing of the Slovenian **Skomina** in the match, just look back a few days.

In Porto, **Juventus** offered one of the ugliest performances of the year, deserving to lose perhaps even beyond the final result of 2-1 in favor of the Portuguese, but in the last action of attack of the bianconeri, immediately before the final whistle, they were not awarded a penalty kick that seemed quite evident for a foul on **Cristiano Ronaldo**, moreover within a dynamic very similar to that which occurred in the return match of the round of 16 with **Lyon** last season, which obviously awarded the penalty in favour of the French.

**Lazio** were clearly dominated by **Bayern Munich**, and even on this occasion only a fool could object to the goodness of the final result, but at 1-0 in favour of the Germans an intervention in the penalty area by **Boateng** on **Milinkovic-Savic** could easily have been sanctioned with a penalty kick without anyone shouting scandal.

And finally we come to **Atalanta**, the third clue, perhaps the most sensational and which, in the manner of the best mystery writers, would provide proof: in the 17th minute of the first half **Freuler** committed a foul on **Mendy** outside the box; the **Real Madrid** player was a long way from the goal, which he wasn't even aiming at directly as the first control was directed outwards, but in the referee's interpretation it was a clear goal opportunity and therefore a red card.

These are all errors that, putting bad faith aside at all costs, certainly indicate two things: the first is that Italian teams do not seem to be too well equipped to compete in Europe with opponents whose intensity of game-play and quality are often much higher, but also that they are never particularly lucky with referee designations.

From **Del Cerro Grande** to **Stieler**, passing through **Orel Grinfeld**, the average quality of the European match directors, if we also consider the already mentioned episodes judged in the past by the various **Çakır**, **Zwayer** and **Skomina** (but there would be many others) cannot but be considered quite poor. It may be a coincidence ( another one), but in major international events the only Italian participants who are often involved in the final stages are the referees who, on the other hand, we have the bad habit of criticising at the slightest mistake.

Strange in this regard what happened to the referee **Daniele Orsato** after **Inter-Juventus** of the 2017-18 season, a match that he undoubtedly refereed badly and with numerous errors of judgement on both sides, so much so that he was painted for months in the newspapers as a sold-out incapable (he even received death threats at the time for the huge and unjustified media hype given to the affair), but awarded by the Iffhs last year as the best referee in the world.

And so when we are tempted to criticise our **Guida**, **Calvarese**, **Mariani**, **Irrati**, **Valeri** and all the other internationals (I would leave out only **Doveri**, who in my personal opinion is a mediocre referee), let us remember the European cups, which our teams often leave too early, largely through their own fault, but often also because they are not too lucky in referee designations, and let us consider ourselves lucky to see our teams judged by the best referees in the world.

#### Cari amici di Steemit, amanti del calcio italiano,

dopo la partita di ieri sera, tra **Atalanta** e **Real Madrid**, sono in molti questa mattina sui quotidiani sportivi italiani ad essersi accorti dei trattamenti spesso poco riguardosi che gli arbitri internazionali riservano alle formazioni del Belpaese, quando impegnate nelle competizioni europee.

E' sempre curioso notare come, specialmente quando **Champions League** ed **Europa League** entrano nella fase ad eliminazione diretta, le squadre italiane impegnate non vengano praticamente mai privilegiate in caso di episodi dubbi, al limite del regolamento e come talvolta (è il caso di ieri sera) debbano addirittura sopportare prese di posizioni arbitrali in grado di falsare e stravolgere completamente i risultati delle partite.

A riprova di ciò non occorre tornare con la memoria al disastroso arbitraggio dello sloveno **Skomina** nella semifinale di ritorno **Roma-Liverpool**, che di fatto pregiudicò seriamente il raggiungimento della finale per la formazione giallorossa, o al famoso "bidone della spazzatura al posto del cuore" evocato da **Gigi Buffon** in occasione del più che dubbio rigore assegnato in pieno recupero al **Real Madrid** nella sfida di ritorno dei quarti di finale con la **Juventus** nel 2018,  ma è sufficiente girarsi indietro di qualche settimana.

A Porto la **Juventus** ha offerto una delle prestazioni più brutte dell'anno, meritando di perdere forse anche oltre il risultato finale di 2-1 in favore dei portoghesi, ma nell'ultima azione d'attacco dei bianconeri, immediatamente prima del fischio finale, non le è stato concesso un calcio di rigore apparso piuttosto evidente per fallo su **Cristiano Ronaldo**, per di più all'interno di una dinamica molto simile a quella occorsa nella sfida di ritorno degli ottavi di finale con il **Lione** della passata stagione, che ovviamente vide assegnata la massima punizione in favore dei francesi.

La **Lazio** è stata dominata nettamente dal **Bayern Monaco**, e anche in questa occasione solo un pazzo potrebbe obiettare sulla bontà del risultato finale, ma sull' 1-0 in favore dei tedeschi un intervento in area di rigore di **Boateng** su **Milinkovic-Savic** avrebbe tranquillamente essere potuto sanzionare con un calcio di rigore senza che nessuno gridasse allo scandalo.

E infine eccoci all'**Atalanta**, il terzo indizio, forse quello più clamoroso e che, alla maniera dei migliori scrittori di libri gialli, fornirebbe una prova: al diciassettesimo minuto del primo tempo **Freuler** commette un fallo su **Mendy** fuori area; il giocatore del **Real Madrid** si trovava molto distante dalla porta, che non stava peraltro nemmeno puntando direttamente in quanto il primo controllo era orientato verso l'esterno, ma nell'interpretazione dell'arbitro si trattava di chiara occasione da goal e quindi di cartellino rosso.

Tutti errori che, volendo mettere a tutti i costi da parte la cattiva fede, indicano senz'altro due cose: la prima è che le squadre italiane non sembrano troppo attrezzate per competere in Europa con avversarie dall'intensità di gioco e dalla qualità spesso di gran lunga superiore, ma anche che le stesse non sono mai particolarmente fortunate nelle designazioni arbitrali.

Da **Del Cerro Grande** a **Stieler**, passando per **Orel Grinfeld**, la qualità media dei direttori di gara europei, se si considera anche i già citati episodi giudicati in passato dai vari **Çakır**, **Zwayer** e **Skomina** (ma ce ne sarebbero molti altri) non può che ritenersi piuttosto scarsa. Sarà un caso (un altro), ma nei grandi appuntamenti internazionali gli unici rappresentanti italiani ad essere spesso coinvolti durante le fasi conclusive sono proprio i direttori di gara, che invece da noi abbiamo il malcostume di criticare al minimo sbaglio.

Singolare a tal proposito quanto successo all'arbitro **Daniele Orsato** dopo **Inter-Juventus** della stagione 2017-18, gara che arbitrò senza dubbio male e con numerosi errori di valutazione da una parte e dall'altra, tanto da essere dipinto per mesi sui quotidiani di colpo come incapace  venduto (ricevette in quel periodo addirittura minacce di morte per l'enorme ed ingiustificato clamore mediatico dato alla vicenda), ma premiato dall'Iffhs l'anno scorso come miglior arbitro del mondo.

E allora quando ci verrà la tentazione di criticare i nostri **Guida**, **Calvarese**, **Mariani**, **Irrati**, **Valeri** e tutti gli altri internazionali (lascerei fuori il solo **Doveri**, che a mio personale giudizio è un arbitro mediocre), ricordiamoci delle coppe europee, che spesso le nostre squadre abbandonano troppo presto in gran parte per colpe proprie, ma spesso anche perchè non troppo fortunate nelle designazioni arbitrali e riteniamoci fortunati per vedere le nostre squadre giudicate dai migliori arbitri del mondo.
