It is written in Greek...from the  Codex Vaticanus of Revelation 13:17. It means 666, according to the Gematria. Since the Bible was written with alpha characters and no numeric ones, when they wanted to write a number, they used the corresponding letter.

@catulhu you are right that it is from Codex Vaticanus of Revelation 13:17. But It is not greek, John did not know what language it was written in, he just wrote down what he saw and asked if anyone with knowledge could explain this mystery because he sure could not as we all know.

So here we have your version at the bottom, mistakenly read as greek from left to right, however it is not greek - it is in Arabic and when you read Arabic you read it from Right to Left since all languages in the world point towards Jerusalem and the Arab nations are on the east side of Jerusalem and when we translate it correctly it spells out directly: "<b>In the name of Allah</b>".

sorry, but in this case I am 99,9% sure it is overmystified and a big misundersanding/s because of bad handwriting and meanings lost to history. Remeber tales and stories have been rewritten and respoken so many times that it is imposible to imagine what they where suposed to describe and mean. Just need to get that out of the way

If you realy want an arabic interpretation: in the name of allah islam...
pretty sure it is misunderstood as arabic insteed of greek, some belive that text was an different hand writing of greek. In greek people have found that it means 666, I don't belive that though. I may be wrong in that though.

So of cours people with power wanted to use these texts to control people. So I guess Codex Vaticanus of Revelation could be manipulated by John. Think about it if knew the meaning of this, this text and  all ancient texts and scripts  in the real context the first time it was spoken of or written, it would possible that it was just the world around them and how to survive they where describing. And then in generations later they said that that is how it is, then a couple disagread and added new stuff they learned. could be that they added stuff to the story that was not "true", but very tru to them then you had the ball rolling.
